You get what u pay for. Nothing is cheap and good. Surely one cannot expect to have Mercedes quality with Toyota price. Or 1Ds Mk2 quality with 400D price.

Contrast in the samples dun look not so optimistic. Not for fussy users.

oops.....forgot to give details....

photos were taken while focused on tree or playground ...hence the background blur
also taken from 6th floor balcony of flat
at 250mm full tele-zoom
just bought last night, so was anxious & rushed to take some shots just before going out to work this morning, with cloudy skies, before the rain started
finally ....newbie la, I think my skills not so good eg. hand holding or breathing technique etc etc

also, at $360 & made in malaysia, I think quite good already. bought it cos I don't foresee myself using it much: merely just to have a lens "just in case" i need the tele-zoom.

will try to put up some nicer, un-rushed shots.

cheers

Wow, for that price I'd buy it. $360 is cheap. Plus they know my face already... hahahaa ;)

You're not getting L grade build, quality, AF, whatnot.. but for that price, wow. If you want a 70-200 f/4L IS, you're looking at maybe 4X the price.

Good point about the 70-300 IS being likely to suffer in popularity because it is a lot more expensive for not-a-lot-more features. Oh well.. I enjoyed mine.. it was good to have..

I think Canon has really done it this time with very decent quality and price, for the 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS. It's a great starter kit or lightweight travel kit.

Hi ray,

All of your shots taken with the 55-200mm? The images look soft.

I wonder if the 55-250 lens (and the 18-55) have been overrated. Some (boldly!) even compared them with the L lenses!!

If the images that I see are testimony of the quality of the EF-S kit lenses, then I have to say they are quite apart from the better ones, definitely far from L quality.

Maybe what people are saying is that for the price, the quality is passable or satisfactory but I doubt they are anywhere near L. Contrast and sharpness are clearly not quite there...

bro,

maybe bro ray took the photos during this 2 raining days, so a bit overcast.

but, anyway, i personally think tat comparing this lens with the L lenses are a bit too much also (its like comparing a korean car with a ferrari).

when i compare, i compare it with the same price range lenses (Sigma 70-300 Macro, $330). if i have a copy of the old canon 80-200mm, i will compare also cos they are in the same price range (less than $500).

Just another question, despite the reasons I gave, does this mean that I got a bad copy ie "not sharp"? If so, should I return it to John 3:16 or Canon for another copy? :dunno:

And yes, I took the photos this morning: cloudy, overcast & just before the rain.

I would personally compare the 55-250 with the 70-300 IS USM.

As a hobbyist and a student, if I were to get a tele lens, it would be either the consumer or mid-consumer grade ones.

Got one pic of the cleaner in blue and the bird is blur... as in the whole pic is blur.. Did you crop? Otherwise is ok...

Ok, so I guess the bird in the 0087 is taken from a very very far distance? That 250mm is also not enough I assume? Haha cos i see the 100% crop the bird is still of normal size... In this case, i guess is still ok, cause of the cropping. If you shoot nearer, I tink should be better. I think the IQ of this lens is still ok for this price. :) no need compare with the L lenses cause they are of different price and 'class' category altogether ;)

When I first looked at the 100% cropped bird, I thought your lens might be defective, but looking at the original, I think it is much more than 100% cropped.

Also, was it shot on jpeg or raw, and what sharpening was applied?

Can someone on the forum provide tips on how to post a 100% crop to flickr? Whatever size of image I upload, it seems flickr will either upsize or downsize, which definitely reduces the quality of the image, and makes it difficult to evaluate a 100% crop. Thanks in advance!

So does anyone know where to buy this lens at the price of $360 and if they still have stock?
I went down to AP today and they didnt have any stock, then MS quoted me $399 for the lens.

I may have got it wrong re: 100% cropping. Can someone pls teach me as well?

I shot photos in raw format, used auto sharpen on half the photos & converted to jpeg for web via photoshop.

Somebody ...Is this considered an ok copy, or a bad copy of the lens that needs to be sent to canon?

AP Funan has..but their bad service indicate no-no buy from them.(Dont buy from them as they cheat ppl as well)

Cathay Photo Peninsula Plaza has stock.I bought from them at the price of $360 as well.Their service is excellent as well

John 3:16 initially i wanted to buy from them but when i went to the store at 2pm+ the stock had not arrived yet and asked me to wait for an hour. After 2 hours the stock had still not arrived so i got tired of waiting and went to CP instead.

Thank you very much.
I called them up before I posted for information and to my dismay they quoted me $390 before GST.
How did you manage to get $360 for your purchase?
Thanks in advance!

Hmm..did u say u be paying by credit card?
I just walked in to the store, chatted to them about the long wait at John's and AP's bad service and finally asked them about the 55-250mm lens.Paid by cash as well.

Anyway if different SE = different price i suggest u talk to Michael Tan of CP and i'll think he quote u 360

No lei..I just asked how much it would cost and they told me $390 without GST. Turned me off so I tried calling John 3:16 again instead. Unfortunately, think they were too busy today to pick up the phone. Good thing I didn't go down or I would have travelled all the way down for nothing.
Thanks for the tip, buddy. I'll probably go down tomorrow morning or so to get it. On a side note, how is it anyway?

Good(Im a newbie so cant get technical) and the IS is quite good(4 stops).
However, one minor niggle is that when the AF is activated the lens will not be pulled back(its a push-pull lens) completely and there will be abt 1cm+ of the lens protuding out.
You will have to flip it to MF to pull it back to the minimium position.

The 70-300 also has this problem. Just point at a distant object and AF before you put it away.
