I read that this lens as an equivalent focal length of 88-400mm, what does this means?

as it is an EF-S lens, the camera mounted must have a crop factor of 1.6x
meaning 55-250 will get a multiplcation factor of 1.6x and appears to a full frame user, that the focal range is 88-400mm

I see.. So if i use a normal 300mm on a 1.6x crop camera like 400D, it will turn out to be 187mm?

coz it's 4th generation IS, can auto-detect, so no need for manual switch

BTW,how come no Mode 1 and Mode 2 option for IS in this lens?
Other IS lens got this IS function so they can pan perfectly in tandem with IS...

To those who knows the history of generations of Image Stabiliser technology can anyone help me understand how long has 4th generation IS been in place.

Is this confirmed?Because i dont wanna have a "lower-end" IS because this lens is a EF-S...

100% centre crop

PS:blur might be caused by slow shutter rather then full crop

Center sharpness is very good. IS works and is very quiet. No Mode 1/2 like in 70-200 f/4L. Focusing is fast and quiet in good light. Not quite as quiet as USM, but close. Lens is light and plasticky but doesn't feel too cheaply built.

Anyone have the latest price quote on this lens?

AFAIK, 360 at its cheapest, JO at funan (non-grey). MS quoted me $399 initially, then $390 (for order of 2 sets) so I didn't get it. :D

It's a good lens for a budget shooter or someone looking for a reasonably sharp and light lens that doesn't sacrifice too much on price and bulkiness. Hope other CSers who have owned and/or tried this lens can post more photo examples too.

$360 is a very affordable Canon IS lens. Do you think this can take reasonably good photos of aerial display during aerospace show?

We will find out soon enuff. The region's biggest airshow is right in our backyard

Can't wait to get my hands on the EFS55-250 f/4-5.6 IS and the EFS 18-55 f/4-5.6 IS combo :)
Though I have other lenses that serve the same range... I think this two will make a wonderful pairing for holiday outing and oversea trips when ones wants to travel light yet doesn't wants to compromise on the range available.

Anyone knows what price is the EFS 18-55 IS selling at ?

that day when i was down at john 3:16 with my fren to get his cam , the 18-55is with 55-250mm was recommended . my fren was actually thinking of getting the 400d kit II with the 17-85USM IS but the guy say buying the 400d with the 18-55 IS and 55-250mm IS will be a cheaper and better combi .

The EF-S 18-55 f 4-5.6 IS will help when shooting in low light conditions and according to user reviews it is much prefered over the 18-85. - travel shots, general shots

The EF-S 55-250mm is will have the extended reach over the 18-85 and its cheap. - close up and potraits

However if you absolutely hate to change lens the 18-85 is better.

Well, you get two lens for around the price of one 17-85 IS USM. Plus the revised optics of the new IS kit lens have been much lauded... Personally I haven't touched an 18-55 IS but if what people have been saying are anything to go by.... yeah I'd get 18-55IS (or Tamron 17-50 for the larger aperture and build quality) and definitely the 55-250 IS for starters. To me it's almost a no brainer....ymmv. ;p

If I really hated changing lens to the point where I'm so anal retentive about it I guess I'd go for Sigma 18-200 OS.

Was at Funan Centre last Sat. Alan Photo still has about 5 sets. Quoted price is S$380/-.

Dont buy from Alan Photo...they do cheat and their customer service is bad anyway

OT abit,

Dont buy from Alan Photo...they do cheat and their customer service is bad anyway

Eh.. Instead of making this kind of comments, perhaps you can inform us in more detail what happened, and why? It's kinda unfair if you just flat out say dont buy from so and so, they cheat, etc...

I've bought stuff from APS before and I find they are much better than one of the other shops I got cheated at.

Back on topic,
Does anyone else find that John 3:16 doesnt pick up their phones =\

Why did you say that they "cheat". I'm usually not very concern with customer service when I had done my homework and know exactly which lens to buy at what price. Any lens<$1000 doesn't really warrant much customer service. For lens>$1000, I would expect teh shop to allow me to test a number of their lens before I select exactly which one to take home. Kindly elaborate please. Good to share. Thanks.
