Erm... Why is Tianya GND a lousy one?

but generally, a "better" filter differs in optical quality, ease of cleaning etc..

in fact quite a number of bros are using tianya...

For example, if now, im using 58mm kit lens, do i go and buy b+w filter? Then im sure in future im upgrading to better lens, which is commonly known as "77mm", then my 58mm b+w how? What im trying to say is, good filter is only used on good lens. I don't have good lens, so i just stick to tianya one. Anyway, u can always sell it off in B&S, i doubt u will lose alot of money since it doesnt cost a lot in the first place...

I would buy a Ø77mm B+W filter and use a step up ring.

Unless it's super wide angle, vignetting is not a concern.

How u step up from 58 to 77mm? Is there such a ring? Straight from 58 to 77?

I only know it goes this way:
58 - 62
62 - 67
67 - 72
72 - 77 --> which means i am stacking 4 rings, then add in another filter.

Which means, there will be a "considerable" distance from my lens to the filter, and to the image, which i think then, would affect the image already. But all these would be wrong if u tell me there is a direct 58 to 77mm stepup ring.

Also, while the thickness increases, the diameter gets bigger. So, like I mentioned earlier, unless it's something like a fisheye lens, there should not be serious vignetting.

Anyway, anyone who have the 18mm kit lens can try mounting the rings and check for vignetting. I may be wrong to assume no vignetting, but it's not proven yet.

I mount my lens hood for 50mm on the kit lens and there isn't much vignetting until about 24mm FL, and which only the edges is affected slightly at 18mm FL. I doubt 4 step rings can affect that much, if any at all.

I never use tianya before and is not in a position to comment on it's quality.

did you guys consider using the slot in type of filters?

Just need an adapter to fit your various sized lenses. Or else, cheaper way would be blue tack

Haha okok, so which model of gnd do u recommend to use for b+w? So far the only thing that interests me is nd110. Otherwise, I thought the money for the stepup rings can get a tianya gnd set already :bsmilie:

Slot in type I suppose u mean square filters? Tianya one is, b+w I don't know.

I think blu tack will make the lens sticky/oily since blu tacks usually come with a thin layer of oil base. U try to paste blu tack on a piece of white paper u will know what I mean. However so, I think there are good quality ones that isn't oily, can't confirm that though.

Up till now I haven't used filters yet. Uncle Lim suggests we get b+w to last us a good long time. Otherwise, I was looking at the tianya ones already as a cheaper alternative.

Using GND is one way. However, note that it will impose a restriction on the composition. i.e. the horizon will always have to be at the center or sthg like that.

Of coz.. you can crop later to your likings.

There is limitation in using screw in GND filters like B+W as the horizon is fixed, however using slot in filters such as tianya, cokin, lee etc... allows you more flexibility by attaching the filter holder on to the lens and then shifting the filters up or down the holder to adjust the horizon. There is a number of reviews given on the Tianya GND comparing it with the relatively more expensive Cokin and Tianya is preferred as its cheaper and do not introduce the yellow cast that the Cokin one does.

I do have a set that I bought from mass sales fourm that I can let you guys try if you are to go for the outings together. However I only have 72mm and 77mm ring to attach the filter holder.

It doesnt seem very expensive. I guess i'll be getting a set later on ~
Its the ring, filter holder, and the GND piece itself, adds up to around 32 only. (dont intend to get the whole set as i dont think i'll be using the ND4, CPL, Graduated Blue/Orange.

Nope its not, anyway Tianya's ND filter isn't that fantastic, the color cast it introduced is horrendous! if you read Hamzee's thread, he posted a picture on it.

Yup, then possibly just the GND only. NDs will still go with B+W

I don't use GND and probably never will. Should the need arise, I'll rather do HDR. But this is just personal preference. not necessary a good habit.

So, I'm not in a position to recommend on GND.

Actually, my comment is for filters in general. It is an additional piece of glass between the subject and the lens. So, having quality filters plays a part in minimum deterioration to picture quality.

I use UV filters and CPL. For kit lens, I'll rather not attach the UV filter to eliminate deterioration in PQ due to filter. For better lens, I use B+W UV filter to protect the front element and keep it clean. Coz I feel it is better to rub the filter than frequently rub the lens front element.

GND would be useless for shots like this.. where the horizon is not straight.

One good example is sunset between 2 mountains....
