...... This starts to sound like a discussion on DPReview... I won't comment.

For the first time I think DPReview is a better place. People seem to take it more easy regarding the E-30 and nobody I have seen is shouting so far.

CS is normally a nice place but this thread has become unpleasant. I am sorry I posted comments. Will not delete my posts because other people quoted them ad infinitum already.

:complain::flush:

Yupe ... CS is normally a nice place, I do agree .... but some of yr comments do remind me of DPR ..... am glad you feel sorry for posting them .... :mad2:

Most of us are just hobbyists with a bit more passion sharing Oly equipment. Personally I use Oly, Nikon, Minolta equipment (and also used Canon equipment before) so I am NOT exactly the most blinded in terms of equipment loyalty. I am sure most of us find it interesting to speculate on new equipment coz that means looking forward .... or we would still be harping on how good the OM-1 was ......

In going through this thread, I am sure you can agree that most of us are just discussing the differences of the E30 and E3 - not putting down either of it. Personally I don't care for the E-3 - just not my cup of tea though I was eagerly waiting for it in 2007. Now that there is another body to look forward to ..... again doesn't mean that when it appears, I'll go straight out to get it. If I don't like the feel of it, then it'll be again another wait for the next body ... whatever ... as it is, I think some of us are just having idle chatter on the relative merits of either body. And if anything reminds me of DPR, it is the "gotcha" and "... forget it; not worth it .." kinda comments.

Anyway ... PEACE ..... or do we have to wait until Christmas to ...... :love2:

Some more numbers from here ....

Right! I've just done some quick timings. Pre-focused in live view mode, with AF on, the shutter delay is about:

E-520 - 0.6 sec
E-30 - 0.3 sec
Lumix G1 - 0.25 sec
E-3 - 1.5 sec

The E-3 needs to re-focus using the phase detect system, hence the longest delay.
The others have no need (with a live view optimised lens) to refocus, but the shutter has to be closed and then re-opened. The E-520 and E-30 also swing the mirror (probably because only one motor operates the shutter and the mirror, but in the E-30 this is appreciably swifter than the E-520.

Ian

I had the E510 .... one of the big reasons for buying the E510 was live view .... and the biggest reason for changing to the E520 was also .... live view. The E510 took easily more than 3 seconds

Curious... is LiveView focusing in E520 so much better than E510?

You can't really focus with LiveView in the E510. To focus, you need to press a separate button from the shutter release, and the whole mirror she-bang thingy goes up and down for the body's Phase Detect AF to focus and get an image in the LCD.

With the E520, it behaves like any of the compact because the AF can use the main sensor with Contrast detect; doesn't need the mirror up and down routine of the regular dSLR. Can AF with the shutter button, too.

And while the E510 is focusing in LiveView, you lose sight of everything on the LCD so there goes your framing.

While we are on the topic of focusing on Live View (which is already off topic from the original discussion) :

I was impressed with the focusing speed on the G1... therefore waiting in serious anticipation on the Olympus offering for the m43 system... the G1 is so much more well built than I expected... I almost bought the red one!

You really don't get it? This is unbelievable! In your own thread...

Your provocative tone IN YOUR OWN THREAD made me delete all my posts. Of course, I can do nothing about the quotes, so keep than for future reference.

Thanks for the info, does that means that the 0.6 sec quoted is for contrast detection in LV?

...the owner, founder and editor of http://fourthirds-user.com regarding my two threads on DPReview concerning the E-30, in which I included in the opening posts an image from his original hands on E-30 article.

Hi Josef,

[SNIP]

I don’t mind this if you are kind enough to provide a link back to our
site so that the same dpreview people have a chance to see the rest
of the article.

Cheers,
Ian

He is of course right, it was a bit nasty of me to do this, and I was just not aware of the fact that my link to his images may cause some unwanted server traffic. The name of his site is all over the images, so I also thought it was unnecessary to mention as it was hardly a secret. Anyway, I realize I should have not done this without asking first. I apologize publicly for doing this, it was undoubtedly wrong. I do not normally regard images as something free to use just because they are available. I can not edit my original post, so I can not correct this in any other way on DPReview. What's done is done, I promise never to do it again without asking first.

Anyway, his site http://fourthirds-user.com/ is really worth visiting, there is a lot to see and read, not only about the E-30 but other Olympus cameras as well. The original article:

http://fourthirds-user.com/2008/11/preproduction_olympus_e30_handson_review.php

contains a lot more information and quite a few really nice and detailed images. So in case you have not yet been there, I can really recommend everyone to pay a visit there. I don't think anybody will be disappointed, it is really worth spending some time there.

A few last words:

Please note, he says nothing about ClubSNAP but I guess since the images are linked to his site, even CS generates some traffic. My posts are deleted from this thread, I have no longer any wish to participate in this thread (reasons explained above) but because some people quoted my posts, I can not do anything about the links in those posts.

You're right. I really don't believe you did anything wrong. You certainly weren't the rude one.

I'm always glad to have your viewpoint in the mix, even if I don't always agree with you. ;)

No one was being rude .... OF was a little condescending ..... again the point was not to put any particular camera down but to speculate on the differences .....

Anyway .... c'est la vie ;)

Sounds like it ..... microcosm was impressed by the G1 and the E30 is just 0.05 sec different. I guess the difference must be due to the mirror mechanism - the G1 doesn't have a mirror.

Let's wait for the bodies to be officially released!

And the Olympus m43 body with the 7-14mm f4 lens! That would be awesome!

I know you've already realised it, but even the 14-42 and the 40-150 (Mk II) also have that blue and chrome rim...
