I think most who are selling the 12-50mm because its slow.

Maybe a number of those who bought it never planned to keep it in the first place. Better deal to buy the single lens kit with omd n sell the lens, than just buying the omd body alone?

I think it is because Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 coming next month, heard it is also weather sealed.
if don't sell 12-50 now, the resale price will drop when 12-35mm is launch.

The price points of these two lenses are quite different. I am guessing the panny 12-35 wld be in the $1k range.

If the IQ is great I will not hesitate to retire the newly acquired 12-50mm even with $1k price. Well, after 12-35 price has become stable/normal.

Anyone know where to get 3rd party battery?
And how much ah?

Ok. I bit the bullet and got the camera with the battery pack and all. I have to say that the ISO performance and DR is a big improvement. Underexposed a shot by a stop and there's still shadow detail at ISO 1600.

BUT. I don't like a few things.

1. The buttons are like a step down from some of the M43 cameras. They are... not firm and sometimes unresponsive.
2. The menu system is an "argh" after using Ricoh and Panasonic.

Also, could someone run me through the magnification thingy with manual lenses? Sometimse I find either the fn2 button is unresponsive (which begs whether it is just my cam which needs a visit to the service center), or sometimes the focus box does not appear and doesn't appear. After a lot of fiddling and stripping the AF functionality to the bare minimum, I got to work somewhat. I had to set manual assist on, and AF to manual, and I think I reduced the focus to point focus. Is there some easier way round it?

Ok here are some "bugs" and tips which I found and not much ppl have discussed in detail about in clubsnap, dpreview or some other forums.

Hopefully somebody from Olympus will read this feedback and solve some of these issues via firmware upgrades if possible.

1.) I remembered posting sometime ago about the evf going all "whitish" and and my suspicion about my OMD overheating, but it seems that few ppl here seem to take note. Anyway, this fellow in a hk photography forum also encountered the same problem while he was in Thailand.

w w w.omuser.com/viewthread.php?tid=188977&extra=page%3D5

It seems to me that overheating will occur if you shoot in a certain scenario

In my case I was testing the capability of the camera with continuous 9fps shooting using CAF with tracking and a Sandisk Extreme Pro 95 mb/s sdhc card. I reckon the combination of rapid shooting + fast sdcard writing (generates heat) + warm singapore weather were the causes. I presume since the camera was designed in Japan, where daily temperatures were lower, heat dissipation was overlooked during design/testing phase.

It bugs me when I have a 9fps capable camera, super fast focusing, the fastest writing class1o sdhc card, but was held back from continuous shooting because I had to off the camera because of overheating problems causing the evf to become unusable.

2. ) Why can't Olympus allow us to custom name MySet to something that's more ... well ... custom ? Also why can't we configure MySet in computer and upload the settings to the camera via usb/Olympus Viewer ?

3. ) The loading of RAW files in Olympus viewer is painfully sloooow .... but then ... it may be just my lousy computer.

4. ) Physical Design/Configuration Issues
- The eyecup drops out ... I had to use a double sided tape from Daiso to secure it. The EP-11 should default comes with camera and not some half f**k rubber.
- The layout and lego tiny buttons (no need me to illustrate further as it has been brought up in many reviews).
- Why can't the Olympus 12mm F2(not cheap) and 45mm 1.8 lenses which I bought come packaged with a pouch and lens hood and not sold separately at ridiculous blood sucking prices ? Damn cheapskate of Olympus when everybody else provides these as standard. This is when I hope some Shenzhen factory quickly comes out with some cheapknockoffs, I am sure all of us would love to save some $$$. Same goes with the battery and grips.

Ok... will stop now before my ranting goes on. Fact is I love this camera despite it idiosyncrasies
Now for the tips to share w everybody

1. ) I remembered seeing posts about the Super Control Panel not appearing or not in overlay mode etc. For those unaware, it seems that if you have the autosensor ON, the SCP does not appear in the evf and also does not overlay over the scene if you use the lcd to compose. You have to switch off the auto sensor otherwise the SCP won't appear in the evf/lcd or overlay during shooting mode when u press info.

2. ) Using VIVID picture mode not only helps in improving focusing, it also helps in Auto-ISO performance by a stop or so.

Olympus engineers are like Singapore Ah Beng who like to zhng their cars, they love to tweak everything in the menu system until some old timers get lost in them...not that it is impossible to find, but it will take a while... I think the effort used to add graphics to the menu could have been used better... like button design...

but as calculated, olympus system is the cheapest vs the rest.
nex 7 + CZ 24mm + sel 50mm f1.8 = 3.5k++
fuji xpro1 + 18 + 35mm = 3.8k++
omd + 12mm f2 + 45mm f1.8 = less than 2.8k++
plus the IBIS, fast AF, good lens... good choice for the "poor-er" hobbyist
no system is perfect i guess...

anw, i'm quite new with the omd too, anyone can enlighten me how they do "HDR" shots and the image overlaying thing. like what settings and software is used. Thanks!

HDR shots can be done using PS, just search in google

I experienced the same issue as you with Fn2 button so I assigned magnify to the adjoining movie rec button which I found more responsive i.e. not so fiddly.

This kinda annoys me. Apparently, if the camera cannot find focus, the focus box does not come on, and neither does the Magnify view. Is there a way to force Magnify to come up regardless?

EDIT: Oh I just figured it out. Apparently you have to double click the damn button. :confused:

Bro, congrats on your new toy! I set Fn2 to magnify ( i think you did too). Don't need change AF to manual, it can be S-AF/S-AF+MF etc, once press Fn2 twice, it's magnified. Fn2 is responsive for me, maybe my fingers smaller? The rear buttons (esp playback and Fn1) is hard to press for me. manual assist on is only for AF lenses and you need to set to S-AF+MF or C-AF+MF, it seems you are asking about manual lenses, this setting won't affect manual lenses? I'm not sure if I understood your problem 100%.

Btw, have you turned on SCP (super control panel)?

Thanks! :) This will be an excellent addition to my collection of digital backs for my m mount lenses. :bsmilie: Now I get some extra reach when I mount my lenses.

Yeah I figured that double press bit... after noticing some things... It looks like I'm going to have to spend some time fidgeting this cam and digging through the menus. I have been too spoiled by relatively simplified menus systems!

And no I haven't turned on the SCP. I shall have to spend time looking for it! But all in all, I would say that the noise is somewhat comparable to the GXR, at least looking at hte raws. The noise reduction feels rather "not so clean" like the Ricoh GXR.

SCP: Go to custom menu - -> Disp/PC - - > Control settings - -> You can select which mode to turn on SCP from here. P/A/S/M. Should save you some minutes. you should like the SCP. Fn2 is actually default a multi-function which is similar to GXR's ADJ button.

I actually find EM5 to be better in ISO than GXR, not really the strength of GXR. GXR is spending lotsa time in the dry cab;p

Noise reduction or noise filter, both different things in Oly, this one's confusing :bsmilie: NR is for long exposure (dark frame subtraction), NF is the probably what you meant by noise reduction.

Correction in order enabling SCP overlay you have to turn off Live guide and Live Control in Custom Menu D > Control Settings, otherwise the SCP only appear in LCD and not in overlay mode. You don't need to turn off the auto switch sensor on EVF.
If you still need Live Guide or Live Control you can assign a button for it in my case I use rec button.
