Does anyone know how to change the area focus 9 group (3x3 grid) to 35 area focus (5x7) grid and vice versa in OM-D EM-5?
I accidentally change from default 9 to 35 but seems to forget how to procedure...the manual doesn't help at all....

Oh yah, before I forget, special mention goes out for my Billingham Hadley Pro bag and my Sirui T-025 Tripod. The Hadley Pro is an excellent bag that proved super useful whether on the streets of Tokyo or the snow of Mount Tateyama or even in the rain. The Sirui? What can I say? A full-sized tripod that you can carry in your coat pocket has got to be the most useful tripod of all time.

Big coat you have...

Enter the focus area selection mode (direction keys), then press info, you can then use the up-down arrows or main (rear) control dial to change the area.

Also remember to set the default home in "Custom Menu" -> AF/MF -> Set Home.

What I did was to set my defaults as a set in "Myset 1", so that I can easily revert to my "defaults" after making numerous changes for experimentation.

Well it seems it doesn't work, after the focus area selection made appear in 35 focus area, the up and down arrow only function is to navigate around the 1 square focusing area (same as rear control dial). I still don't know how to make 35 change to 9 Af area and vice versa.

Well I may not clarify enough what I mean. I don't mean to change the active area (green square) of focus that can be customize to 1x1 square or 3x3 square or any configuration of active focus area out of 35 dashed line square through arrow button/ dial selector. But the physical grid (grey/white dashed line square) of AF area it self.

When the camera arrive the physical grid (dashed line white/grey square) of AF area consist of 3x3 mode only (9 focus group/ larger square). I can only activated one or all of the 3x3 grid. Accidentally I change it to 5x7 mode (35 focus area/ smaller square) but I forget how I do that. Now I don't know how to change it back to 3x3 grid mode.

Yes I still can choose/activated the 3x3 out of 35 AF area only, the active Af will be highlighted by green and the rest will be grayed out dashed line. But it's not the same with the first 3x3 mode only. But thanks for the effort.

Never mind I know how to do it I must activate the Digital-Tele Converter first....:-)

I compared the GX1 with the E-M5 with regards to the 20/1.7

The AF for the GX1 is marginally faster than the E-M5 and E-M5 fails miserably when dealing with low contrast areas, while the GX1 seems to be able to nail down the focus reasonably fast and accurate.

The AF using 45/1.8 are very similar.

The AF for the 7-14/4.0 seems to be hunting a lot during my trip and does not nail down focus on many occasions.

This is worrying me as the AF for E-M5 seems to be behind even the GX1 for Panasonic lens. No doubt some of these are older lens, but the probability of unrealiable focusing does not says well about this body. I am wondering if the engineers bothered to test it with Panasonic lens.

Wah, anybody also experienced this? I'm planning to upgrade my GF1 to EM5 but all my lenses are Panasonic

I've got the GF1, GX1 and EM5 but my only Lumix lens is the 14mm f/2.5. No noticeable difference.

For some unknown reason my Built-in EVF Frame Rate setting (Custom menu J, item 5) is greyed out, i.e. I cannot change it from Standard (60Hz) to High (120Hz). Has anybody encountered this issue? By the way I have updated my E-M5's firmware to 1.1.

ahhh...jus realise this and not sure this feature is already there.

when doing video recording, touch the screen to choose where to focus....eg...2 person, 1 in fore ground, 1 in background...can focus on the person in foreground 1st, then touch the screen to switch focus to person in back ground...is this feature available? nvr play with video b4...lol

hehe! Well, it's a winter coat and 80% of the tripod sticks out of the coat pocket, but at least it keeps your hands-free. :D

No wonder. Was wondering. I have lots of winter coats- the T025 won't fit fully into any of them. Maybe the inside pocket, though.

anyone using the tone curve adjustment?
i'm still trying to wrap my head around how to use it best.
for example, shooting a temple with a bright sky behind it. do i
- expose for the dark temple then pull down the highlights curve to minimize the sky blowout? or
- underexpose, say EV-1, to save the sky, but push up the shadows curve so the temple is not too dark? or
- keep EV at 0, then push up shadows, pull down highlights, resulting in a reverse "S" curve?

the last one kinda flattens the contrast so i'll be avoiding that.
or maybe i'm completely mis-using the tone curve or confusing it with proper exposure selection?

just curious how others are using the tone curve feature..

not sure, but my guess with the bright sun behind it, u will b losing details there.
mayb a cpl filter and nd filter?

Thats the beauty of the evf n tonal curve. U can adjust to your taste. There is no correct answer juz wat u prefer. I thk i wld go for your first choice but underexpose the temple by 1/3. But it really depends how much colour is in the sky n how much u need it.
