I guess every dSLR camera can do the same or better with these photos. What I'm trying to say here is that if you are buying a dSLR camera, try it in a store and test it by yourself, not just listen to what others (especially the salesmen) say

If anything, salesmen would harp on the megapixel myth.

Get a camera you are used to. Go to the shop look for one you are comfortable with and take a few shots with it.

Yeah, the Pentax is a toy, but it's a toy that I like, as long as it can produce pics like these

Besides, it (a Pentax Ds, similar to the DL) felt the best when I tried (including C/N/KM/O ones) during the Sitex Show.

All these dSLR cameras are good enough for us amateurs. It's just a matter of personal taste I guess.

My suggestion is go to a shop and try out these cameras by yourself, choose the most appealing one (to your self, not the salesman). As to lenses, you are not going to need more than 5 (mostly), and I'm sure you'd be able to find these 5 lenses sooner or later.

No, these were not taken with the kit lens. But I've seen many excellent shots from the kit lens too. As a matter of fact, I had the kit lens for a brief while too. Here are some samples I took with the kit lens (the only time I used it) if you are interested:
