ClemC, 70-200 durian leh... dunno VR II or I...but going with price, you might wanna check leh - if VR I too ex liao...
Thanks .. will have a look

wah... you do scan this just try to find an explanation. Thank you. :)
Just curious, is ADL an additional process that the camera will do or it is just taking the raw file and lighten up the shadow?
Bro CT - read the thread - i think the whole page is about what is ADL :) ...
As for me, I have sufficient info to make up my mind..

as for the image.. no need to scan la.. I was reading the online version of a manual.. just cut & paste only... you just reminded me to remove the image :)

I print screened... Convinced yet? :)

Bro, tks for taking the effort to do a comparison :)
To be frank, I can't say that I'm 100% convinced that ADL is some magic step in the image capturing process that somehow lifts the shadows.
Your ViewNX software has applied the ADL 'preset' (if I may call it that) to the NEF file.
You can see that between the 2 screen shots that the brightness, contrast etc settings are different. if indeed ADL were a hardware step, then 2 essentially identical NEFs with exactly the same presets would yield 2 different results.
Correct me if I'm wrong to think along those lines.

Two things.

1. View in LCD is a jpeg thumbnail rendered with in cam settings.

2. Cam settings are stored as info in a raw file. When using viewNX, it will read that info automatically apply the in-cam jpeg settings to the image by default.

So you can really only compare if you open it using lightroom or adobe ACR. Both of which will only apply very limited settings like WB.

Okay, dully noted. Thanks for the clarifications. That means, if you want to keep the ADL settings, you would have to open it up in ViewNX and save a jpeg from there. Otherwise, opening it in PS or LR would mean not having done anything to the image at all. Comprende.

Btw, it means I'm inclined to believe ADL is software processing and not hardware. :) Understood-ed about pre-sets, and LCD previews too.

ClemC I assume you did inquire and the outcome is that it is VR I and it is way over priced? I just noticed a price change... :bsmilie:

Ya, that is my understanding so far.
That's why I was going on about how ADL is useless to me, coz I import into LR3 and then click my own pre-defined presets and adjust from there.

That is to say it is an in-camera post processing. Not a function that happen when the process of capturing a photo happen.

Just tested out the ADL on my D90 from my bedroom window. Took with ADL to 'off' and ADL to 'high', using manual exposure mode and Auto-ISO=off in order to keep the exposure consistent from shot to shot. They certainly looked different on my camera LCD :)

Imported both NEFs into LR3 and applied the same preset (so that all the values are consistent).
Absolutely NO difference whatsoever. So this confirms my hunch. ADL is a software feature that is applied to the PP.

Yo ClemC! Another durian plopped! A bit higher than what you're hoping for by considering it's still quite new? :)

See before. You would like to take the lead with your Lx3? :bsmilie: For me, unless I'm certain I don't need to re-sell the body for any possible future upgrade... anything's possible. ;)
