DIY vertical grip for my 5d... vertical shutter release works:):)

I was so inspired by you guys that I tried making one myself.

Initially had problems with the sliding of grip, and solved it with an ugly but cheap solution - black rubber band.

you can use 2-3 of those stick-on rubber pads used for chair legs, just paste them on the grip as smtan24 suggested. i've used some rubber-sponge thingy strips that i found in the storeroom (i think left over by some aircon repairman), and they work well too.

Oh ya, I was actually looking around for those, but couldn't find any, and come across the black rubber bands. :light:

uh.. your neighbourhood hardware shop will have these things. normally in a pack of 4, 8 or 16 (round or square) for < $2. looks like you don't dampen your chairs, have your downstairs neighbours ever complained? hee... :bsmilie:

i made my already, will buy 2 NP-800 from ebay in next few days.

got a slight problem, my hand grip will not fix nicely already.

uh.. weikee, what do you mean? if you mean the handgrip can't fit nicely NOW, then check to make sure that you've cut off all of the plastic battery insert - you'll notice that that end is slightly higher. if the handgrip is sliding, then use those rubber "feet" (the thin type) used for chairs and it should hold nicely on your 5D. If you're talking about fitting in the batteries, then you'll need to take out the guts of the battery compartment in the grip. that's gonna be messy... just be careful not to weaken the structure of the grip.

What i mean is the hand grip "or hand strap" i purchase to replace the standard strap, it will bolt in ok, but one end will extend around 1/2" out,

waaaa... vg plus the hand grip... i think thats too thick for you to hold the camera properly! i believe such hand straps are designed for use without a vg, i.e. one or the other. haven't seen anyone use both at once, yet...

since i got the Hand Grip, and made a VG, its better to put for good use. guess its not a good match afterall.. sigh

The battery pack cost SGD55 from Cathay Photo. Cut away the battery insert with a pen knife. Next remove the covering near the shutter button. You will see 3 wires Blue, black and yellow. Blue & Black short at pre focus and Blue black and yellow short when shutter button is depress fully. Remove the exisiting cables and solder in new wires. You can use a CD rom audio cable for it. You need to cut it as you need only 3 pins. Next you need a hole behind for the wire to go through. Please follow jsbn's wiring below:

I was thinking of soldering 2 wires from the electrical terminals and add a plug to connect to the camera. Viola power from the grip also.

abt the P1,P2 and P3 which wire go to which?
the green,black n blue lines linking together is quite confusing

you can on the camera, plug the socket in, and try short 2 than 3, you'll know which one goto..

It will not harm the camera.

P2 and P3 are shorted at half press. P1, P2 & P3 are shorted at full press.

p1 to p3 in the diagram will match the pins on your 5d when you look at it from the side. try shorting pins 1 and 2 (paper clip/ staple/ metal object) and you'll notice the camera focussing, short all three and you'll trigger the shutter release.

the difficult part (i shouldn't really say that) is the vg, but a simple voltmeter can easily test which pins are connected at half-press and which ones at full press.

Trigger Happy check yesterday P2 and P3 is for focus lock. P1,P2 and P3 for shutter release. Checked my cable release with a ohm meter yesterday.
