Ditch your DSLR for the OMD?

Great... waiting for my Leica R adapter then...

awesome I could only dream of owning a leica lens for now I have to do with Russian, Nikkor AIS and Canon FL :-). Its fun (for me) using MF lenses really love the IQ of the older lenses :-). I hope you'll enjoy your MF lenses once your adaptor arrives

It's normal. There will be a majority still prefer the DSLR setup cum pns. For different reasons. Last time there was a endless debate of flim vs digital. The winner was clear now. Now mirrorless and DSLR will be the new debate. Let's see who is the winner in the next few years..LOL

Definitely mirrorless camera. The physical shutter of the DSLR is a barrier to faster shutter speed. Once the AF and auto tracking software capability of mirrorless camera catch up, even the 1DX and the D4 type flagship will be history. Just a couple more years perhaps...
If canon or Nikon do not come up with a capable equivalent in time, they may be joining kodak soon.

Can't decide to upgrade to the 5DIII or the OM5 now. I have a feeling will go for the latter.

Thought the 5D Mark III is already at 1/8000s while the top shutter speed from Olympus and Panasonic bodies are only 1/4000s? Thought OMD is also using physical shutter?

Where are your facts?

I think there is mirror rotation and shutter speed and he has mixed them up.

I think one day, all camera should do away with the shutter and let exposure timing be controlled electronically.

Interesting. I guess but why they still need shutter now. From wat i understand, its a rolling shutter.

hmmmm i think not yet now.. but i want to get OMD as my backup...

I'm already primarily using my OMD instead of my Canon 7D. With my Canon 7D, and all the lens that I have, I found it too be so bulky and heavy. Also with old age, it's getting difficult to carry a heavy load, and the hands now not so strong and cannot hold heavy cameras in hand.

OMD is light, and so far, the photos from the camera are just as good as my 7D... no complaints.

I've sold off most of my canon lens, but I just kept the body with 2 lens. Now even thinking of selling those! =) Hahahaa

My dad was contemplating the same and waiting for the GH3 release.

However, he is having second thoughts after the new firmware update, the playback seem to take forver after each shoot !!

No, not yet, I guess it depends on the sort of photography you do. For more demanding situations I still have to use my D300s, and Nikon's CLS flash system is indispensable to me. :)

i think OMD is still better specs compare to the upcoming GH3....

Canon 350D user from the day it was launched. Nowadays its always with my Sigma 30/1.4.
Have put all kinds of stuff on it, Zeiss, Leica-R, Nikon, Pentax, manual, non-manual... the only ones that produce the IQ i like are the Leica-Rs.
Then when Lumix G1 came out i bought it as a backup. Just threw a m43-EF adapter and everything is fun. Even tried the Samsung NX100 which was pretty okay, with decent IQ.
Budget is pretty low so never could afford a double-digit Canon body.
At one point even bought a D90 but gave up because the WB was giving me too much headache.
Not looking for a DSLR replacement... i think for me nothing within my budget can beat my 350D+30/1.4 combo even though its considered jurassic by todays DSLR standards.
Been looking at the OMD ever since i read that a pro was using it in the recent olympics...

Nearly tried to justify the NEX-7 with the intention of getting some adapters... i think that would have been a bad move...
I only get one shot at this... takes me years to save up coz its a hobby...

i think anyone who has used an (D)SLR with a prime wide open can appreciate my apprehension to whether or not the OMD can deliver similar IQ and experience.
I mention 'experience' because getting great bokeh is very VERY satisfying for me.

i estimate a similar setup to my 350D/30mm combo with the OMD would set me back at least S$2500?

specs for me isn't everything... the feel, the ability to intuitively bring the camera to the eye and shoot in a second (or two) with decent focus and exposure is all i need.

so is this the camera to get at this point?

i think so...

Gonna be using the EM5 together with my D7000. Have always wanted to have a smaller, DSLR-quality camera as my second set. And I really do think EM5 fits the bill.

Hopefully can keep both systems for a long time. Right now, I just have the 12-50 kit lens. Have never used Olympus camera before, so will probably play around with this one lens and body for a while to get to know they system.

If your most important requirement is to get great bokeh, sorry to say you might be disappointed. We get good bokeh for what we have, but no way can it to compare to the kind of bokeh you would get with your current setup.

I think the pl25 and omd would be able to meet your needs

pl25 is the Panasonic 25/1.4?

if that's what is means then yes, i think that is the only combo that sounds closest feasible...

6 mths ago i was ready to get the 60D, then the 650D showed up with Digic5.. but it seems like canon is deliberately holding back... very frustrating.

Every company would "deliberately hold back" for business reasons. Why release everything at once when you can do it in waves and make a bigger total profit? As I mentioned in another thread, manufacturers are out to make as much money as possible and nothing else. They are making techological advances not because they want to, but because they have to (in order to remain profitable).

Back to topic, my E-M5 + 12-50mm f/3.5-6.3 + 25mm f/1.4 replaced my Canon 60D + 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS + 50mm f/1.4 setup. I also had the superb 70-200mm f/4L IS but did not use it often enough to warrant a replacement. I am also fortunate to have a photographer friend who lent me her Sigma 30mm f/1.4 during my DSLR days. Never mind the size and price first; let's compare optical performance. The 25/1.4 is miles better than the 50/1.4. The latter exhibits strong halation (where bokeh "bleeds" into in-focus area causing the whole photo to look dreamy) and the build quality (especially the fragile micro-USM) is mediocre at best. The Sigma was rather soft at the borders and worse at the corners. That forces you to either stop down (and give up some subject isolation and bokeh potential) or put your main subject near the centre (and crop later for a better composition). It was also plagued with front- and back-focusing issues. The 25/1.4 shows none of these problems. The image is sharp across the frame even wide open. The bokeh is smooth and pleasing, and there is no halation. Focus is quick and silent, and the only issue you need to watch out for is purple fringing.

Price is a different story altogether. The proceeds from the sale of my entire Canon setup barely paid for the m4/3 gear. In your case, you can barely fund the 25/1.4 by selling both your body and lens, so you are looking at an extra $1700 for the E-M5 itself. You may wish to rent it to try out first before committing your hard-earned savings.

i still have more faith in my 7D's servo-AF than the E-M5's tracking-AF.
