Huh??? Isn't cibachrome a thing of the past?
Ilford has announced the discontinuation of Cibachrome/Ifochrome. I believe they have taken the last batch of order, and this order will be delivered until Jun 2013. After which, unless the guys in China is going take this upon themselves, possibility the ultimate, most brilliant, most archival display medium for chromes will come to an end. See this thread:
Ilfochrome Update
With the passing of Ilfochrome, I don't know if the life of E6 will be cut short as well. After all, if one only cares about digital scanning, it's a lot easier to simply shoot negatives - wider exposure latitude made them so much more forgiving than chromes. The end result doesn't make much difference anyway if you go through the digital path. Ilfochrome/cibachrome has always been the ultimate destination for any photographer that shoots chromes - well, not anymore after Jun 2013. B&H still have some starter kits left, so if anyone that's keen, we can buy a set to share.
I have read that the closest alternative to ilfochrome/cibachrome in terms of the brilliance of display, is Fujiflex Crystal Archive, which is a RA-4 based medium. I am not sure if any lab locally offers it. With the wet darkroom, I think we are able to give this a try.
FWIW I've been printing with Frank Green (The Lab - Index) for the past few years. His work is superb, and he likes to talk to you about your image before printing it. That kind of attention usually isn't given to small fry like me. He tells me he has material to print for the next 3 years so there is a bit of time yet for cibachrome.
