welcome to allahabad. shot on one of their pre-wedding celebrations.... but didn't get to see the actual ceremony, according to one of the guys, it is supposed to be on for a few days.

p.s. sometimes the flare saves the pictures, while they can unexpectedly cover up important parts, they may also introduce light and colors to shadow areas. if not this picture may be a gone case (or maybe it is a gone case which only i myself thought is not bad....:sticktong )

The photo does signify the happiness, joy and excitement that usually surrounds a marriage ceremony. The blurred movement of the guys dancing shows the thrill and fun that they were having. But the two lights on the right are just too bright, the faces being backlit also doesn't really help.
I wouldn't really say its a goner, but its nowhere near the class of your other photos.

#80. you are quite a "candid shots" guy :bsmilie:

you are mostly right (or at least similar to what i thought) on my pics. i wouldn't really say that partially backlit faces with strong lightsource are always bad, becos i have tried it out in some cases and find the effect explorable with ps or via rim-lighting or side-profile-lighting.

shadow detail retrieval (from ps)

however, the pic in concern have too much shadow with non-retrievable details. the face portion are al'rite, but too much shadow proportion spoils the pic. that is why i said thanks to the flare. and for my case, becos i add watermark, that dead space could be put to use; sometimes i have some pics that i cannot put my watermark in.

as for #80, i think i relied on color and texture. if converted to b/w, the flaw of weak composition would show up even more. but i must say i absolutely like the guy's ease with his posture, very macho. the only good thing the front guy did is to make it less conspicuous as to what the back guy is washing, if there are female viewers on my thread....

wider angle of life by the river. composition and sharpness wise, this pic may not be strong. but i kind of like the array of activities shown. and again it is the colors....

the girl at allahabad.

i'm doing travel photography but some times i face things i wasn't totally prepared and yet to be able to sort it out till now. it has been my personal belief not to give in to begging after some bad experience and it can be a dilemna if we would to give out sweets, pens or money to get photos as a travel photographer. for this trip, we keep very much to that belief and many times appear indifferent to kids who ask for money along the way. and there are many situations you wouldn't even be thinking of giving that in exchange for photos.

this girl appears to be begging for money. it would be very difficult to look into her face and still appear indifferent, but yet the question is raised, should money be given to begging or should it not. the very last time i have given money to strangers on the street is probably in laos to a mother (who appeared later) after seeing a little kid (likely only 1-3 years old) with some bad skin disease (might be parasitic) together with everyone on the trip, and decades ago in UK to a teenage girl who is homeless (but well, think she's got some family problem and left home though) and just sent out of the hospital. but this case is not exactly the same as the previous two who did not beg for money in any manner. she looks pitiful though, and no matter which decision is made, to turn away from her (and not looking into her eyes) and swiftly leave, or to give in and give her money, both will leave a low feeling with a wondering of whether either way is right or wrong.

i shot this from about perhaps more than 100m away from my fellow companions where my presence is sort of inconspicuous to her, and i have been wondering for months if i should show this. but after seeing renegade's "Along the Tracks in Jakarta, Indonesia", i think it probably is not as bad as i think, maybe. i still dunno. there is so much uneasiness when such situations arise, especially where they are standing.

i'm not sure if i remember wrongly. according to binbeto, these are priests from various sects setting up their "store" where they bless their followers with a dot of dye on the forehead. here is one with plates of dyes on his elevated platform where he sit.

I am not a street/candid/people photographer. I just don't have the courage to face people if they confront me as to why I took their photograph - as simple as that. So, I don't have to deal with a situation of photographing beggars etc.

But the other questions that you raised in this post are quite valid. Remember what I wrote to you guys before you went on this trip ? Your aim on this trip was not to eradicate poverty. Its simply illogical to think that by giving a few pennies, some sweets, pencils or pens to beggars you can turn their lives around. Yes, it feels ruthless, merciless to put on a blank face and walk away from them. But you just have to do it. In many cases in India, begging is an extremely organized racket. Kids, amputees, lepers etc. are 'recruited' because they have a higher potential to 'earn' money. I don't want to get into a flame war over this last comment of mine, as this thread is about your photos.

If I am serious about eradicating poverty, I would rather spend my time with them - in teaching them about hygiene, working to provide them a good education, basic living conditions etc.

Don't feel bad about taking this photo or posting it here. Consider it as just another people shot. That's it.

you know what you can do? shoot your friends and companions. you can shoot them in action, at rest, eating or anything. they bring scale, meaning, silhouette and while shooting, gives a leading line to the focus.

in a certain way, i like people who are more accomodative in their culture and are curious about you as a photographer - that is how the relationship is often built on. surprisingly i have come across photographers who like to shoot portraits but have an unexplainable feeling of being intruded when being photographed, just like some people who doesn't like people to sit on his bed or his chair. some kind of personality disorder associated with the social background.

i see, i see. i keep getting the feeling from the lighting that some drunk men's going to linger around there. besides, that is not the real name to the location, just my self inventive term. you won't get the locals having such names for the place.

Very very nice series!
