Delhi & Uttar Pradesh rejoiced (horizontal series)

so other than posting comments of encouragement and showing your photos to other friends, i can't add much value.

that is not true. you add a lot of value becos you know more about the culture of what i'm shooting.

manikarnika ghat. a guy drying his cloth.... wonder if the cloth is his own wearing that is to be dried after washing, or if he is drying some cloth that is dyed.

i have a hard time trying to catch this photo. the cloth keep covering his face or drop too low in my frame. and unlike speed photography, i can't even predict the moment. this is the better one, although i still wish that the cloth would fly a bit higher.

what and who to critique ? quite a few people in clubsnap are equipped with a good eye for photographic detail. many a time, they hold back their comments - either not to offend the owner of the photos or they just don't feel inclined to waste their precious time or maybe they even have some sort of insecurity feeling that by providing intelligent critique the photographer might improve (i might be totally wrong on this one, so there is no need to flame me). everyone is entitled to an opinion, and so do i.

actually i myself have experiences from making comments, on newbies, on contemporaries, on experts and seniors. i got a general impression there is a higher likelihood of getting the following response from those who have reached a certain standard

1. "point taken" or "yes, i know that already" (fullstop)
2. "i dun understand what you mean." (when the message is clear)
3. "i like it and that is all i care"
4. "i can't make my pictures works for everyone" (which is to say the one who criticise is the odd person)
5. no reply (but replied to everyone else who made praises)

i think point taken and yes, i know it are pretty benign reply, but surely there is other things to add. like what you say, the thinking process.

sometimes the replies range from patronising to clear cut unwelcoming to negative remarks, especially on things they deliberately made so - which made people think again on making criticisms on some solid forumers. nobody wants to appear like a smart alex to others, or to appear to make an opinion to the "master" and got replied to like as if they are idiots who are bring brushed off.

i think all these may be part of human nature, and i can't even remember if i have ever been guilty of that too. but i would just like to say, i welcome criticisms.

The guy must be a priest in some temple. The saffron color has some religious significance (this seems to be something common across many religions - Hinduism and Buddhism too) but i don't know what it is. What he is drying must be some sort of shawl that is used to cover the upper part of the body. At times there are religious inscriptions written on it and its used to cover figurines of the Gods - something like this in the photo that i found on the net.
