Delhi & Uttar Pradesh rejoiced (horizontal series)

Hi Zoossh,

Nice photos you have there.. very natural. I have a few questions:

1) What lens or lenses are you using?

2) How do you approach them for a photo taking session in India? Do you have to pay them for a session?

3) What lens would you recommend for a newbie like me for portraits? I am thinking of getting the 85mm f1.4

Thanks.

1) What lens or lenses are you using?

Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 VR2
Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6

2) How do you approach them for a photo taking session in India? Do you have to pay them for a session?

no, i dun do salon art.

i just smile and raise my camera to my upper chest, if no objection, just snap. usually they will pose on their accord when you do that. if i have a gut feeling they will ask for money, i dun bother to approach.

i may at times gesture them to move their direction if their back is facing the sun, that is about all i will ask, otherwise it will become too artificial for me. the reason why i will bother to change their posturing against the sun to avoid a silouette is becos some of them requested to have their photo taken (not that i approach them) and they wanted to see their face on the DSLR panel, hence i think the last thing i want is to show them their silouette.

i'm also a newbie who learnt portraits from travel partners. for me, i used my 50mm f/1.8 as my primary streets portrait. in fact, when i run around the streets, not sure of whether i'm shooting near or far, i even used my 18-200 to shoot portraits. when i have the time to change lens, i do 50mm. i used a thinktank waist system, hence given about 10-15s, i can change lens quite conviniently.

not sure about the other lens. you can try checking it out at other subforum. if your shots are predominantly studio-like effects, can ask the poses and portraits section (mostly studio shooters, artistic portrait shooters); if you shoot a bit more event and indoor, can ask the wedding photographers; if more for travel and environmental portraits, maybe at nikon or general equipments subforum

allahabad-naini yamuna bridge. there is a general yellowish tinge to the blue (might be the filter), unfortunately i can't get rid of it well. by the way, if anyone is asking, there is some basic flare in the pic, but i added more to make the sun even look spiky rather than blobby. the blue and yellow circles on the right comes as a package to the preset flare function of the software, i reckon that does not add to the picture. when i got better post processing skills, they would be off.

korean tourists are among the large majority over there. probably on par with the caucasians. here the kids are trying to sell some flowers that are supposedly offered to the river. it is ok if they tell you how much it cost at the start, but it can be rather unpleasant when some ardently wanted to give you that, asking you to put into the river, telling you no problems. as an ignorant tourist, you may unknowingly do that thinking that you are trying to be friendly, only to know that you would be charged for it later.

i dun have one. thinking of buying a 2nd hand SB600 to start learning it. if not success rate at nite only 30-60% only. i dun like the harsh flash, hence may get a lightsphere to go with it.

Cant agree with you more. The harsh light will kill the ambient.

The koreans ladies wont be captured with such an impact with direct flash.
(for that pic, u capture with 50mm or 18-200vr?)

At times, i'm troubled to make decision to fire the flash or not. The ambient light might be killed....

zoossh, your travel pictures are really exceptional!! a real inspiration. each time i see your pictures, makes me want to kick myself in the butt thinking, "now, why didn't i capture something like that?????"

a mixture of luck and some post processing, i guess.

parispur, people waiting for the train. low light in winter makes things easier to shoot despite of a shorter day and shorter afternoon. the goldren rays are more than transient. other than long hours of sleeping in boredoom, occasionally wakes up to catch a few pictures from the train.

Wow.

When is your next trip?

Always happy to see the world through your eyes.

hey zoosh, just want to let you know I really enjoy your work. Well done!

thanks, terence and laugh, no overseas trip for another 6months, got to rest, and concentrate on work and study too.

#48 little squirrel outside jodh bai, while waiting for a friend stuck at the little stalls in jama masjid buying sourvenir. not a bad wait though.

i inch slowly towards the squirrel a step at a time, a picture at a step. this is the 11th shot after taking 11th steps. the easiest time to shoot these squirrels is when they are eating. the easiest to lure them out is also with food.

luckily i'm shooting travel, not nature or wildlife. otherwise the bars there are really bad. but for me, not a major concern.
