I have encountered more than a few instances of dead sellers i.e. sellers who post "WTS" ads but never respond to PMs or queries. I always wonder if these sellers are trying to create an artificial market.

I wish there were an avenue such that these dead sellers could be buried for good.

part of the anwser may be found in this thread,
Why low-ball?
Where some sellers have no interest to deal/entertain with buyers who don't meet their criteria.

Maybe related to this?

Why would someone post a fake WTS to create an artificial market? Wouldn't that make it look like there is over-supply?

My guess is item already sold and seller was not checking for messages any more (or didn't bother to reply).

edit : zcf beat me to it :)

I must admit I usually ignore any crappy SMS/PM offers after the 2nd or 3rd one I receive. It's scary to see the number of crazy offers sometimes, for example I am selling something for $500 and receive many offers for prices like $200, $210 blah blah blah.

Well if course if the buyer offers something close to the asking price, the seller should respond.

Recently a friend told me a story. He was selling a camera, and someone claiming to be a student asked for a big discount. So this kind seller agreed, and was then made to provide film and also transportation home to the student. Then the buyer later asked for things like body cap etc (which were not part of the deal) and guess what ... the exact item was on CS buy/sell for a higher price than what he paid for the next day! And the seller was the 'student' who bought it. Talent!

There is many, and there is many.. and all come in different viarieties.. sometimes I reply to silly offers.. like "wah new one so close to your price".. when there is a $300 difference.. or when I was selling a $600 tripod and someone offered me "$80.. quick deal, not sure of prices, consider" blah blah..

I usually price items to sell, I have no idea why people who are interested in buying a lens would bargain for $20.. but if I get tired I sometimes see no point in answering, I am tired, I got flu and I am wiped out, you tried your luck, it failed, why should I waste my time? Fair I thought.. low ballers want to play ball.. it doesn't mean I also want to play ball :) ...

Yet again this is not a exclusive singapore thing.. recent sales on ebay for a zeiss lens, I got someone from scotland (!) emailing me the same story (student, would like lens, how about if you sell it to me half price? sounds like a nigerian funny emails "you send money" kind of thing doesn't it?..).. I wanted to reply "if student and can't afford, you should be looking at other brands maybe like I did when I was a student", but sense got the better of me and I just ignored it and sold it to a singapore fellow photographer..

Live to learn, learn to live.. sometimes will politely reply, sometimes will politely just ignore.. surely both are polite answers when one offers $80 for a $600 tripod? No? :)

First rule of bargaining, SLASH IT HALF PRICE! Then followed by, FAST DEAL!!

your friend too kind to do that.
to me student or no student, there will be no discount given.
i need money to feed this hobby and most of that money will come from the selling of my lens.
i don't mind them selling my stuff again as long as they don't mention themselves as students when it comes to bargaining, which is a total turn-off.

It could be the item already sold.

It could be asking the questions which all the information already stated in the thread.

It could be seller withdraw the item for sale.

It could be out of town.

It could be anything.

yeah, kana this before, and also other types of incidents.

conclusion: never trust anyone, especially those who claim they are students.

students are richer than some poor working adults nowadays
check out their gears they bring to school events and events.
put a lot of us to shame.

using or owning low end gears it's nothing to shame about.

:bsmilie: Reselling what you just bought seems to be rather popular here! :bsmilie:

if ur wish for an avenue to bury dead sellers comes true, the next wish avenue will be for dead buyers.

there are tons of reasons why the seller don't respond. many are discussed above.

life isn't always bed of roses. if that person nv reply u, most likely it means he/she doesn't wanna sell it to u. simple. just relax, don't brood over it and go look for some other good deals. :D

True true....

I got a case of a dead buyer too. Hmm, guess my offer to sell wasnt too attractive ? hahahaa......

Anyways, if this makes anyone feel better, I buy/sell wakeboard stuff over on another local forum and the same things happens.... Student, big discount, delivery, reservation until weekend, even asked me for WARRANTY before ! God..... the most ridiculous was telling me he wanna pay me via installments !!!! Geez, I am certain I didnt put a XXX Bank at my signature...

Hahaha..... but yeah, dont brood over and look for some other deals then. And then, tell your experience to others for a good laugh !

Cheers!

To the TS I am closing this thread.

1. Calling members who do not response as being "dead is not a civil or nice thing to do. It is akin to cursing them dead.

2. As much as you have a choice to offer a price the seller also has a choice to response or not.

Anymore of such name calling/branding by the TS will not be tolerated in the future. :nono:
