You have to remember I am using a 300mm lens with a 2x TC on a FF cam. So I have a FOV of 600mm.
For some of the shots (for example pic #9) I am really close, around 4m. Most of the closer looking pictures I average 6-8m. Some are 10-20m away. I have also some subjects as far as 20-40m (eg #24) away which I very seldom post, more for recording purpose. The further away the subject, the worse the quality of the picture will be. I am on a Fullframe camera with 16MP, which makes it even harder to crop too much. The bigger the bird/subject, the further you can afford to be away from the subject.
So for birding, I usually captured and spotted a lot more birds than I posted. Because some pictures are just not that great, because the birds are very far away, or obscured too much. I will keep those images for my own recording purposes.
From what I learnt from my sifu, and IIRC, with the 300mm lens (which I am using), maximum subject distance for optimal IQ is around 15m or so. For 400mm, maximum subject distance for optimal IQ is around 20-25m. Beyond these distances, your subjects will start to loose a lot of sharpness.

I went to Jurong Bird Park yesterday morning for my first birding shots after practicing in neighborhood shooting mynahs and pigeons.
Some of the birds there were tame enough for you to stand an arm to shoot.
Initially I thought you cropped/magnified the images into bigger size fir us to view.
I guess in the wild you need certain sleuth or stealth skill to shoot.

Please do not get me wrong, cropping is necessary for me. especially for small birds like the flycatchers, sunbirds etc... Even more so when I am using a Full frame cam body. The problem is, even with cropping, there will be a point where you crop too much and the image quality will get so bad the picture is not usable. Even with 600mm you need to crop sometimes.
