hi d90 users, d90 hd recording @ 720p max. only can record up to 5mins?

Yup... Nikon's video is truly weaker now compared to the competition. But even with these limitations, you can already shoot awesome videos. Just take a look at this one that is totally shot on the D300s (video is similar to D90).

So I guess it has a lot to do with the person behind the camera AND the person doing the editing.

If you haven't already heard, trade in shops gives very cut throat prices. Sell in BnS, you get more that way.

BTW, what lenses do you have now that you want to let go?

But sometimes, it is the seller that expects too much.

For example, I see people selling the 35mm/1.8 for 330-340 without warranty. Funny thing is that you can get it NEW and with warranty for less than 330 in stores, gst included too. :dunno:

Your test chart seems perfect....

If you shoot a lot of still life stuff, watch out for the MFD.

thanks. cuz those "front focused" images i got was when i brought my 35 f/1.8 pretty close to the subject. but when i shoot my dad and mum...seems ok leh. hmm, must be the MFD.

Or shaky hands or... a myrid of reasons. Remember to read up on the pages that came with the focus test chart. About how each AF point sensor detects focus. That is why the focus test chart is designed that whay, only one thick black bar across the center. Especially when very close to the subject matter, a little error and the the subject can get OOF due to the very thin DoF.

Ya true. Last year I understand. the 35/1.8 was so hot it was out of stock everywhere most of the time.

But between a out of warranty copy and a readily available new copy today... that is a bit too much lor.

the menu button of my D80 is screwed now, I refused to buy a new one because of (1) 720HD video, (2) 24fps. So Nikon please please, please come out with something better, dont push me away from the dark side.

You'll probably see something better in the D90 replacement. Many people are expecting an upgrade to the video.

Had read already.. But dun quite understand lo..

Maybe go get someone knowledgeable to guide you or attend one of the course in basic fundamentals, I think Nikon runs it regularly.

Not trying to insult you by asking you to start from basic, but, if you want to pick it up fast, LIVE class is a much faster way for you to get on the road, before using what you've learnt to experiment and develope from there.

Agree with the other bros here, if the basic manual is already a novel, it is almost impossible for any bros, or the whole group of bros here to help you do a forum learning. There are just too much to it.

If you have specific problems or question, then, the bros here can help you or advise.

This D90s thread have got one of the most patient group of bros/sis that I noticed, though some can be a little blunt at times (or joking!):bsmilie::bsmilie:

peihao83,

I just want to tell you that I know how you feel.

I bought a D90 not knowing exactly how a DSLR works. Like you, I read the manual already, but I didn't understand it although it's in English.

So I put it aside, google instead, for whatever I want to know. The world of google seems more useful to me because some websites would explain in simple terms.

For me, I am not concerned about the technical aspects as long as I get pictures that I feel 'wow! This is what I want, or more than what I ask for.'

Somebody in this forum shared the method he uses:

1) Shoot in P mode. 'P' is programmed mode, which means the camera does everything for you. It's better than Auto mode because the flash doesn't pop up all the time.

2) Look at the ... exif file (do you call it that?) and take note of the different readings ie. aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc.

3) Try it in A (Aperture) mode, where you just adjust the aperture OR

4) Try it in M (Manual) mode, where you adjust the settings the way you like it.

This method helps me alot in using the camera.

You need to keep shooting to realise what you want. At first I also didn't understand what this means - keep shooting. It's like if you're committing a mistake, you wouldn't know, right? So you need to look at others' pictures and perhaps try to create something to that effect. It does not mean the same setting, or subject.

For me, at first I just wanted sharp or clear pictures.

Then later, I wanted more, because I kept shooting and looked at others' pictures to know what constitutes better pictures.

Many months later, when I understand the camera better, know what is 'aperture', 'shutter speed', 'ISO', and why sometimes the shutter doesn't shut altho I had pressed the button already, and sometimes I use manual mode, I find that the manual seems to make abit of sense. I still don't understand many things in the manual. By reading over and over again, it doesn't help me. But whatever I want to know, and feel that the manual can't give me, I google.

I still don't understand 'depth of field', and a host of other things, but nevermind, as long as the pic looks good to me, can already. I know I'll understand it sooner or later.

Hope this helps.

Oh, when I said 'keep shooting', I also mean 'For the same picture, shoot a few times to get the effect you want. Adjust the zoom lens, or the aperture, or the shutter speed, or the ISO to try different settings'. I used to think that all good photographers only shoot ONCE for the pictures they want. A colleague told me the professional photographers would shoot a few times to get the shot they want. So by all means, shoot at the same thing over and over again, and adjust the settings differently, until you achieve the effect you want. Usually I adjust the aperture and the difference would be quite substantial.

I just posted this in another thread.

For those who do not already know it, Nikon has Digitutor webpages which runs through the basic functions of the camera. If the manual doesn't make head or tail, then maybe can try the digitutors. Even as someone who have been shooting for many years already, I find the digitutors useful especially when it comes to the newer features.

This one is for D90.
