haha hello all, been shooting with my kit for some time now and recently borrowed my friend's 50mm 1.8 to try haha. thinking of getting one of the 3 lenses below as my next lens, which would u guys recommend? i tend to like to shoot street and people as well as events. for now not so much into scenery hence no need to get a wide angle yet

1. 50mm 1.8
2. 35mm 1.8
3. tamron 15-50 2.8 (should i get the vc version? does it make alot of difference?)

ermm hw come no 1 tok abt 35 mm f/2.0? i believe its the non afs version?
which 1 is better for d90?

i vote for DX 35mm 1.8 for D90.

If you're not thinking about future-proofing (i.e. jump to FX), then I'd go with krozby's decision.

DX 35mm f/1.8 = SWM (Faster Focus) + f/1.8 (Larger Aperture) + Lower Price Tag

AFD 35mm f/2 = FF (Can use on film/fx format) + Better Bokeh

Not sure which is sharper, but the FF certainly doesn't have the amount of distortion the DX faces (according to Ken Rockwell).

Given the choice, I'd just go with the AFD.

yeah id ont think i'l be jumping to FF anytime soon in the forseeable future yup as ive just kinda started out on photography more seriously than just pns haha!

I've just bought the 35mm f1.8 this evening. I haven't do much testing yet but initial impression is that the 35mm is really sharp wide open and even sharper than my other f1.8 lenses, the 50 and 85mm.

Going to get 50mm f1.8, do quite alot of research.

But I wanna hear from you all, how is it when you all use?

Its a mild zoom compared to your normal view. If you find the shots you're taking at 30-35mm with your kit lens to be only slightly too wide, then the 50mm is probably a better fit for you.

Will recommend tokina 11-16 to add on to ur arsenal for landscape if you yearn for a more exaggerated point of view that ultra wides provide. You might wan to start looking into filters (cpl, nd, gnd) for more creative possibilites..

For Nature by itself is too general to recom u anything..
Are u referring to Macro, wildlife, flora? Wad kind actually?
There's no one lens that do it all, each kind of lens have that specialization which fully serve its purpose..

HTH :)

New guy here ^___^ and hi!

Ive been using a D90 for a good 5 months now and Im thinking of getting a flash unit, really sick of the built in one :(

I mainly do outdoor shots and sometimes night shots. Been thinking if I should get a SB600 or SB900. I guess you can say I am still a newbie, but I do a lot of reading o_o.

Any suggestions?

If you do not know which to buy between SB600 and SB900, the answer is clear that you will only need the SB600.

Lenses do not help you to get better pictures of landscapes and nature. Learning and practice do.

I recommend a good book on landscape photography. And yes, the other first thing you need is a stable tripod.

Hi guys, just got my D90 a couple of months back.

Just wondering if anyone is using MF lenses on their D90 and how they deal with the lack of metering?

I am also using some manual lenses. For metering, you have to use the most traditional meter of them all - YOU.

Read up on Sunny 16. Another thing you can consider is to get a light meter. If it really bothers you that much, and you cannot live without your manual lenses, you can also consider an upgrade to a D300 or D300s.

Mmm I suppose :) Thank you for the reply! I am going to like it here :D

No problem. I have been shooting for a while now and I am still using SB600 as my only flash. I am considering getting a Nissin 866 though. But I have been delaying the purchase again and again as I do not use that much flash.

Thanks for the advice. Will consider getting MF lenses when I've got the moolah! ;)
