D90 User Group (V)

This is my first time using Auto area as well. Hmm ... no control over the focus point leh. I thought could select own focus points.

hmm ... why cannot reply to me huh?

I love clubsnap. It gives me insights on how men treat men!

Wow, easy bro.... no reply could mean a lot of things... most of us don't knows the answer, no one happened to check into this thread, etc...

So, for everyone's sake and yours, please don't jump to conclusions. :) We are all learners and users here, helping each other the best we can... Me? I don't know the answer... so I don't post (to avoid unnecessary postings)

Hai.... see you all reply to him, really don't know what to say.... To use manual with multiple points, the steps as below.

1: go to custom setting menu.
2: go to autofocus
3: go to AF-area mode
4: use Auto-area
5: try shooting mutliple items

I'm ... er ... easy. I was referring to this reply 'see you all reply to him, really don't know what to say'.

I never jump to conclusion lah. I was just wondering aloud why he said that. Is it becos my question is too stupid or is it bcos it is a mode that no one should be using since it's so 'auto'? That's all.

I honestly do not think that it was meant to be insulting to you... chill :)
My unfamiliarity with this 'auto-area AF' stems from my lack of use of this feature.
I would prefer to tell the camera what to do, rather than worry about it misinterpreting my intention and screwing up my shot.

But going back to my point about 'focus plane', lemme give you an example:
If you place 3 objects on a table, at 30cm, 50cm, and 70cm respectively from your camera, then no matter what auto-focus mode you use, you'll struggle to get all 3 objects to be perfectly in focus. But if all 3 objects are the same distance from your camera, it really doesn't matter if your camera selects 1 object, or all 3, but they'll likely all be in focus.

Hope I've managed to clarify things a bit.

i just got a SB-900 for my D90.
when i set the cam to manual mode (M), my shutter speed can only go up to 1/200.
is that the max for D90? or is there a way to go higher?

thanks! :)

how to let the shutter speed go higher for SB900 on D90?

I think "FP Sync" or something like that. You press the "?" button (when tgat function is highlighted) and there will be some explanation.

Hi guys,

Wanna ask a question?

I'm gonna take photos of my dog birthday celebration at those pet cafes and the cafe has normal fluorescent plus spot lightings and its not really a low light environment.

Question is i am contemplating buying either a speedlight sb600 or 35mm f1.8 lens to achieve a better photo or rather to compensate the brightness. Both are about the same price.

I've read the forums as well as asking my friends but its like 50/50. Some say get a flash while some say getting a faster lens like the 35mm f1.8 is good enough for my situation. Any gurus can shed some light or advise me?

I would like to get the lens as most of the time, i seldom use flash or shoot in daytime.

All comments or advises are greatly appreciated. Thank you :D

Mixed lighting (fluorescent + spotlights) can present a problem with regards to white balance.

But anyway the main point you're asking is to seek advice about whether to get speedlight or fast prime.
To be honest it's really hard to choose between them both.
I go to my fast prime for a couple of reasons.
1) It's really light and small
2) With a large aperture, you get a nice thin DOF and also can capture more ambient light

but often I still couple this setup with an ext flash that I bounce to the ceiling

so in conclusion I think both have their uses. If I were in your shoes I'd get the speedlight first

Just to say "hi" to all...I was thinking to get a D7000 but in the end got myself D90 as I do not have too much time to shoot nowadays. so D90 is more than enough for me. Thanks to all who contributed to this thread so ppl like me can learn.:)

I was so wanting to get the D7000. Then realise this year dunno why work load quite hectic..haha..din really have time to go out enjoy photography...so was thinking for hobbyist who just shoot when free, a D90 is more than enough... now I am still evaluating the lenses focus accuracy on the D90...seems to be slightly different from the D70. Anyway, D90 is worth every penny..very happy with it...haha..
the only nit-pick would be the lack of Af tune..haha..but still, so far no problem with it..

Having recently thrown the D90 into the gauntlet...I realised D90 is actually quite a capable body (ISO levels could have been better - but I'm pushing it too far already). Yes, it lacks certain features that came with the pro-bodies (D300s and upwards) but definitely packs a good punch! And given the lower prices these days - damn value for $$$ - I agree with you! I now fully understand why Nikon place it as a serious amature body - bordering on almost going into pro...

haha...when D90 just came out, it was one of the ASPC format with outstanding iso performance...can't compare it to the new D7000..lol..for the value/price, i am very happy with it...though losing some aspect of the D70 that I had...

The menu system in the D90 is more systematic and customisable than the D80 I used to own. I particularly liked the fact that the 'Fn' button could be customised to open up the 'My Menu', to which I would select certain often-used functions like self-timer, etc.
At the time of launch, the 3" high-res display was also way ahead of the rest, though now it is purely par for the course :)
