Sorry, I was out just now... giving my D90 and filters some serious UV exposure... :bsmilie:

coz GND graduation line is straight (horizontal) while city skyline with buildings is not. if you use a GND to try to properly expose the sky but there are numerous buildings sticking out, chances are those buildings will have the upper part dark while the lower part will be brighter. not good to look at, right? when using GND, it's best for when you have a straight horizon like those sunset shots with the sea.

just my 2 cents ;)

There soft and hard GNDs... soft GNDs may save some situations (eg, you want to get some blue in) Hard GNDs more suitable for horizon shots... Soft GNDs more suitable in normal day shots where there are a few trees or buildings sticking out... Adding my two cents as well...;p

Use matrix metering. Set to Aperture Priority. Lowest ISO. Stop down the lens to maybe f8-f13. Then bracket your shots ie. for every scene, take a shot at 0, -1 stop and -2 stop. Shoot RAW. That should cover most situations of bright lighting.

Thanks for enlightening. I'll give it a try tomorrow.

oicc..supplied with my kit lens? dun haf wor..:what: :(

what about prime lens? what kind of hood is more suitable?

18-55 kit lens doesn't have hood, but since we're on the d90 thread i assumed your kit lens is the 18-105 that does come with a hood. for primes, except maybe for those telephoto primes, i think only the 35mm has it, and its the regular cone shape. correct me if i'm wrong on this, i only own the 50mm prime.

Get the Nikkor catalogue, it will say if each lens comes with hood or without. Go ask each shop if they can spare you one (when you buy a lens or accessory). NSC should have them - a must if you are a Nikkor fan boy... ;)

Do you guys normally use UV filters and your lens hood?

adding another 2 cents to what krieg said, soft GND's are those filters where the graduation between the light and dark part of the filter is subtle, hence can use (to some extent) for uneven horizons. hard GND's are those where the line between dark and light is very obvious.

Lens hood depends. Filters 90% of the time. But whether ND or UV depends lor. I only remove my filter when it causes flares/ghosting

Take note that if you use slot-in filters - you won't be able to use the lens hood. You'll probably be required to get/use the filter holder lens hood. But never a must - so far i've shot my images without using the hood.

I used clear glass protector on mine. Didn't get the UV ones - coz UV filter only useful if you have film SLRs...

Additional note, if I don't use filter holder, I'd use the hood - looks a bit stupid with the hood reversed. Recommended to use the hood if you can in case of some accidental flare... Btw, those who are new - when you put on the hood make sure you turn all the way and "snap" it on (there should be a sound). For me, I was quite blurr in the beginning, didn't know you're suppose to turn all the way. Ended up that at one time, the hood went rolling off by its own...

I think if TS is on budget and in real need of a speedlite.. I would recommend DI866 since it cost only $380+/-
while SB 900 will be above 2.5 times more.

Besides both are comparable in term of function. just some slight pros and cons which I think it depends on personal preference.

I have a suggestion for everybody in this group.

Next time when we have an outing, can we have a name for ourselves here?
First this is to let everybody know we are Nikon D90 group that is different from other outing.
Second when we start a thread at Kopitiam, at least it does not get confused with the rest.
Third our objective might be the same as other outing groups to learn and share but we are more into sharing the knowledge of Nikon D90 here instead of other brand.

anyway, above is just a suggestion. Please do not get so offensive about it. I come in peace ^^

Sounds like a plan. ;) How do you propose we start doing this? Open a thread in Kopitiam to TCSS about D90, while talk nothing but D90 in here? Frankly, after you've learned much about the D90, there isn't really much to talk about other than the accessories and other genres (landscapes / macros / portraits, etc using D90) and to help newbies (those unfamiliar with the cam's functions even after reading the manual).

erm.... we need to come up with a name first.
den we should think about the objective of this group.
Other than help newbie with their camera function etc.
We could also add on, what are the things that D90 is good at that we could
test on and have outing cater to that particular area.

Good example would be, D90 have TTL. So those who have flash, we could try out flash photography using D90 etc. But of course we ourself will have to try out first before we can really go on to teach anybody.

Correct me if i dun make sense anywhere. I got too many dead brain cell..

Thanks bro, I think the only chance for me to know what I want would be to go for a test.

I seriously am looking forward to the next D90 outing ;)
