Is USB 3.0 not fast enough? I thought USB3.0 hdd should be more affordable (compared to thunderbolt hdd) and a lot faster than USB2.0 ones.

Sorry my MBA is still support 2.0 only that why I need faster speed..

Got latest model call seagate backup plus. The adaptor can remove and plug in for Goflex thunderbolt adaptor price is USD $120.00

Hmm I shall check it out, hope it will run on thunderbolt speed. If that works it mean can run on both pc for USB3 and TB on Mac. That will be perfect.

I rack up about 10+GB of RAWs every week (I don't shoot with a JPG copy). Usually keep them in internal HDD for quick reference, and in external HDD for backup. If I delete from internal HDD, will backup another copy on yet another HDD!

Anyway, I just came back from Nikon Service Center, with 2 unresolved problems. They said they'd get back to me again regarding these issues..

1) Occassional extremely slow writing speed
- Saving of picture takes 5 to 10 seconds in normal shooting (1 shot per few seconds at best).
- Completely random, happens maybe once in a hundred shots.
- Has not happened in burst firing before.
- Happens on both SD and CF card

2) Rear Sync Flash fires twice, at the start and end of exposure
- To test, set flash to REAR sync, and use bulb mode. For each exposure, the flash will fire twice. It should only fire when the shutter closes.
- NSC tried on their own sets and got the same problem

If you are getting the same symptoms, post here as well and see if we could get more clues to troubleshoot.

Just test mine, it's fired twice, at the beginning and when the shutter close.
After doing some searching, the first flash is preflash to evaluate lighting power required and the second is the real flash.
If you don't want it flash two times then just change from TTL to manual then it only will flash once before the shutter close.

Ha ha I'm interesting to know about it...

The technician also told me that it is preflash. But the thing is, all my settings were manual. Manual focus, manual shutter, aperture, ISO, flash power. I rarely ever used TTL. It didn't make sense for it to preflash at all. And the thing is, the problem doesn't exist on my D80.

Just got today, for thunderbolt adaptor in funan.

You wont see a really big difference as the speed is limited by your hard disk spinning speed. typical 5400 for 2.5 inch. unless you are using a SSD inside to maximise the ability of TB, or it will just as slow as your 2.5/3.5 inch hard disk speed no matter if you are using USB or FW800 or TB.

Of course, its still far more fast than USB.

same transfer from 9.05GB at 9 mins vs Using Thunderbolt transfer at 4 mins.
Cut your transfer rate time into half.

The transfer mean can be slot the SD Card on MBA and copy all the RAWs into your External HD.

Goflex being more portable but it runs on a 5400rpm hdd and from what I read from review is not maximizing the full potential of the Thunderbolt. The reading/writing speed is not far off from firewire. Whereas for WD which uses 5.25” 7200rpm hdd, there is a more significant different in the speed, however it is more of deskbound as it is too huge to carry around, cost more but larger capacity. The WD is able to perform raid 0&1.

Maybe you can consider as SSD on normal external 2.5" HDC.
The speed runs on USB 2.0 the read & write Speed still get winner on thunderbolt.
Cause I have one at only 120 GB only.

I hope you guys are reading the edited HQ Jpeg from these backups and work your RAW files from the main laptop.
Its just too slow to do everything via TB adapter, unless its a SSD TB interface.

I'm running on SSD (1 for OS , 1 for working files) and I find it a bit laggy at times going through the pictures in LR (200-300 at a time) even though it has been catalogued in LR
This is coming from uncompressed raw, which I think helps a bit with the file opening within the system.

Hi Rain5533, will this Thunderbolt work with a HDD of any brand, not just with Seagate?
And must you use the TB cable, or just any USB cable will do?

So far only seagate offer the removable adaptor.
If you need the original come with thunderbolt for buffalo only.

I also hope to remove the seagate backup plug casing and replace with the SSD into the case and works be more faster.

But not now ha ha.
