Hi All do you know of any cheap (non original) alternative for an external mic for D800? The built in mic is badly constructed and can pick up lens' auto focus sound very easily :/ Have to turn off the auto focus but that's hard to capture moving objects. Can we use a standard mic plug into the D800?

Even with external Mic still can pick up. So far I have been using rode stereo videomic pro. Level set to 5 on camera and using +20db on the Mic. The focus sound is min. But if crank up vol still can hear especially in very quite situation.

hi Bomby, thanks for the info.. hmm, doesn't sound promising :/ wonder if we can somehow mask the sound. Also wonder if a "shotgun" mic can be the solution.

Anyone also used Eye-Fi for D800? I heard such cards heat up a bit and of course have concerns about damage to my cam.

i am thinking of going for capacity over speed

with a similar speed CF card

maybe 32GB SD/ 8GB CF
Raw files in the SD card and Jpeg files in the CF card

what do you think?

Would advice speed over capacity for D800.. Just the other day.. transfer 300++ RAW Lossless 14bit from my 32GB 95mbs/s to lightroom with covert to DNG and 1:1 preview generation.. it took almost 30 mins or more..

So far no problem with my 16GB 45mb/s SD card :)

What is the best external microphone for the Nikon D800/D800E?

I have a shotgun mic as well.. Audio Technica AT something something.. it is a long mic but no shock mount like the Rode which apparentl help. I normally set this guy in the telemode.. but the autofocus still can be picked up.. The autofocus sound picked up is different from the Rode.. rode sound is kinda needle static like while the Audio Technica mechanic like.
