but i guess its not worth it if i wanna buy my own stuffs right? for eg. the bag, the mem cards and dry cabinet....

it depends whether you need the freebies. most people (at least for me) find the bag and tripod useless. then there are some who already have tons of mem cards and a bigger drycab.

well like methoddingo said, it all depends on you. for me, before I bought my D7k (I bought it slightly before the IT show), I didn't had a dry cabinet, didn't had a suitable bag, no prime lens, and just a Kingston 8GB class 4. If you ask me, the freebies already pay off the price increase

icic thanks guys shall do my math this coming IT fair in june =DD

It's not worth the freebies from the IT fair. Seriously! IT fair will only sell at MSRP, street price fluctuates and usually goes down. The freebies would end up replaced pretty soon. Only the dry cabinet and the kata bag caught my attention. The rest are just CMI.

Get a good friend who knows well and shop at funan. You can try during IT shop period and ask if they can match the freebies.

Yeah, i also recommend that you resist buying from the quarterly IT fairs. Their prices are ridiculously over priced. The freebies seem attractive but its all an attractive ploy in making you pay excessively, thinking you got a good deal. Trust me, just grab the camera from your friendly local camera store (tk foto, john, alan photo.....etc) and keep the spare cash for accessories that you'll soon find you need.

they're just not aiming at the more experienced photographers. newbies like us have no money for extra lenses and stuff. i personally don't have the revenue to buy any backpacks, tripods, prime lenses and speedlights.

Still dun believe me? Here's the break down:

D7000 kit - Show price: $2299 | Street Price: $1900ish | Extra spent: Minimum $300 to Maximum $400
Freebies 1: Show: 2 x 8GB | Street : 1 x 8GB | Extra gifts: Maximum abt $16
Freebies 2: Show: Kata 3n1-10 ($85) | Street: Nikon Brace Bag ($35) | Extra gifts: $50
Freebies 3: Show: Card Reader | Street: None | Extra gifts: Maximum $5.00
Freebies 4: Show: Cleaning Kit | Street: None | Extra gifts: Maximum $10
Freebies 5: Show: Handstrap | Street: None | Extra gifts: Maximum $15
Freebies 6: Show: Travel Bag | Street: None | Extra gifts: Maximum $50 (I don't even think I would use it...)
Freebies 7: Show: Silk Tripod | Street: Tripod of Equal Value | Extra gifts: $0
Freebies 8: Show: Akarugi Dry Cabinet 30L | Street: none | Extra gifts: $120 (I think)
Freebies 9: Show: 50mm F/1.8 | Street: None | Extra gift: $195 max

I'd purposely left the last 2 because I feel they are the main attraction in IT Show. So from the calculation, you gain $461 worth of freebies by paying about $400 xtra. Sounds like a great deal to you? Maybe? But to me, the only keepers in the list of freebies are, the kata bag, the 50mm lens, the dry cabinet and a slight maybe handstrap.
That makes my total only $380, even if you throw in the extra memory card to the mix is only worth $396. So, do you think you are getting freebies or buying freebies?

Think about it.

It's a known fact that those who do their homework will never buy at IT shows. Be it first time owner or upgraders.

Supposing someone doesn't has any items, then yes it's worth. $61 is still a sum. If on the streets you find 2 sets, 1900 and 1950, of course you'll go for the 1900. Plus at IT show, more people are buying so there are lesser chances of receiving faulty goods.

I dun understand your logic on this.

Anyway, If you feel that freebies are worth then go with your heart and buy at IT show. I've pointed out the obvious that u are technically buying 'fixed' freebies, not what you need and definitely not something worthwhile.

Coming from a guy who had learn the hard lessons from my first DSLR purchase in the IT show, I feel sorry for your choice if you indeed choose to buy from there.

Peace out...

hmmm... i'm new to DSLR too. Got my first DSLR thru this group buy. And i spent months studying / researching what I want to buy. I also set aside a budget to get extra lenses / dry cabinet / filters and bags.
Deciding on the budget and the items you want is a serious process. I created a spreadsheet of it and kept tweaking the items so that it fits within my budget. Camera choice also became a variable during this process.

No point hooting a gd camera but not able to protect it well. You'll only end up having some bad feelings and not enjoying the photography experience. And for a 'cat' like me, I want to spend my hard earned $ well, so i spent the time calculating each component and savings I would get.

This sound so much like building a computer rig :) ah.... Miss those days...

hhahaha! can't help it. I'm from this field! =p

Hi cowseye. Would like to mention that assuming you only keep the bag + 50mm + cabinet + handstrap (which btw is definitely beyond $15), you have a leftover of 1x8gb ($16) + card reader/cleaning kit ($5 bucks cause its useless) + tripod (seen it sell at $30), so effectively you get to keep a travel bag (you can sell this if you want) and get the kit lens set at 2299-$380-$51= $1868 (even with some of your items being underpriced) with the potential to drop even further. So assuming that I have sold everything off including the nikon travel bag. I definitely earn overall. This is also including the fact that I managed to clinch the it deal with 2 filters (1 for kit and 1 for 50mm) which drops the price by maybe $40 bucks? I can even sell the nikon umbrella that was given if I wanted to push it to the lowest for maybe $10. So whether or not you have any things you like on the freebie list (best if you have). You gain in absolute net amount. So I can say that I got a better deal cause after selling off all the freebies (and yes they really can be sold), I actually only paid ~ $1.75k plus minus. Furthermore using the credit card without any extra 3% charge I managed to get 5% off in cashback from $2299, which amounts to 114.95 (make it $115 for easy accounting), I effectively paid $1635 for kit lens set with travel bag + umbrella (they weren't put into the accounts). Now unless I have made any flaws in my calculations, even if I have, I don't see how you can match the gap between $1635 and $1900-$35(bracebag) - $5(cleaningkit) price for street.

As promised, here is the goodies that I have bought. Relatively expensive and burn a big hole in my wallet. Originally, I was comparing between Nikon D7000 versus Sony A55 versus Canon 60D. But in the end, I bought Nikon D7000 because of feedback and recommendation from all the fellow members here.

Ok, A lot to go through, one at a time. Kinda hard to read your paragraph but I'm guessing you were sending through your mobile device.

Firsty, Main Point: "You are BUYING freebies, not getting them for free." Which makes the word "Freebies" questionable. Plus you don't have a choice of what you gonna get. To me the Kata 3N1-10 is a keeper, but not necessary to another who finds the shape odd. If he buys from the show, does he have the choice to be discounted with $50 and get the brace bag? Or $85 to not get the bag at all? I state $85 as this is the price I saw at a shop in Funan selling THIS bag. Yes, the one with the nikon logo.

Secondly, how much effort you have to go through selling off the things you DUN want then get the things that you DO want? How about just get the items that you want?

Thirdly, maybe I might had accidentally underpriced the item of the lower tier items like cleaning kit, but do note that I said $10, not $5. Which I think normally they sell about $12. (That's the only one, the rest of the item I can easily get at the price I stated or lower)

Next, congratulations that you clinched the deal with extra umbrellas, filters, no extra credit card charges and rebates. But that's not the point here. I'm comparing directly what the items shown on the PC show price list to what is being offered at camera stores (without bargaining, just ask for quote price). In fact I chose to compare with the freebies given at camera stores NOT during PC show. I had heard during PC show times, they will throw in similar freebies to matched with the offers at the show. With your bargaining power, you should be able to get more freebies from them during the computer fair period, not any difference from the IT show. Cash rebates from credit card wiht no extra charges, Kudos to you. You might want to help bro seezhijie which credit card to use to get the max rebate.

Finally, reselling your freebies, honestly speaking, do you think you can sell them at the price that you paid for? I doubt so. Here's to what I think, considering I'm not selling those things that I would keep.
a. 1 extra 8GB memory card, are you able to sell it at $15.50, which is the price of such cards from other store during the PC show?
b. Card reader? Would anyone make an effort to get it from you @ $5? Any heartland malls in sg have a PC related shop that sells it. Even popular bookstore has them ^^". Sim Lim square sells single type (SD card) card reader at only $4.90.
c. Travelling bag, I dunno about this one but you might sell it at a good price for it.
d. Tripod is usually at $30 with a lot of lowballers bargaining at abt $25 or $20. Plus you have to compete with other camera buyers who sells off their freebie tripod at the same time.

Re-affirm my main point, you are BUYING freebies, not getting them for free. Do a bit more research, know what you want and get them. I won't say totally don't even look at what PC show has to offer, but historically, they had never surprised me. MSRP stays, so does PC show price. You might see a drop in street price, but less likely from the show.

you're only comparing with your own needs, but i know you're sort of like a more experienced photographer (though not necessarily) since you appear here really often. for you, yes the PC show rates for D7000 are utter rubbish. but for others who just started photography, these things may mean a lot to them, especially when they can't earn their own income (like me). also a good chance for students to trick their parents into buying it (like me too =X). the term "not necessary" implies that there are still those who wanna keep it. you are one of them already.

Oh and I didn't buy my D7000 in the show. I bought it in Challenger slightly before the show. not with credit card either. i paid full cash. 41 pieces of $50 notes

anyway this is getting interesting. the 2 of us started debating coz of shaoz2388, then hawthorne907 came in and the 2 of you started debating XD even though shaoz2388 already disappeared from the thread

Sorry for you man. That's y I advice you from an experienced point of view mah. I've been thr it, not wish to see other newcomers falling into the same trap.

I don't think i'm the only one here advice against buying from the show. To tell the truth, with the knowledge i've now, even if I dun have any equipment, I still won't buy from the show. Becos I, probably most other bros here, know what is good and what we want.

The items I said I would keep those worth keeping, but definitely not what I want. The real true keeper among all freebies, IMHO, is the 50mm F/1.8. Go shoot more, you will eventually understand what I mean.

problem is i don't have the luxury of doing things like an experienced buyer. my parents just won't understand that it's the same thing. NVM i'll be graduating from secondary school soon anyway. my friend intends to hire me as a cameraman for his short films. then i'll be able to buy more stuff like dry cabinet, prime lens, flash and backpack.

I've a couple of friends who were having this problem like you. There are ways to buy cheaper items which I'd help them to get what they need and spent lesser. The $400 price diff is just not worth it.
