Well the ev thing is actually exposure compensation. You turn it down, you'll get darker images, just like digital cameras. But the digital cameras do this without you knowing. For the DSLR, it just changes the reading in the lightmeter, which in turn changes the shutter speed, ISO and Aperture. Not much of a difference than setting yourself. The only way I can think of is to Photoshop it, compose your image such that it won't be shown, or if you want something more exciting, saw off the light source =D I usually use M mode to remind myself of the control I have. My friend who uses P mode always complains about blur images, but comes to his senses when I told him "increase shutter speed". Of coz, use some other modes like A or S if you don't have the time you need to set, like in events when the lights suddenly switch off

M mode is probably the way to go. I usually shoot in A, but in this case I shot in S mode and the camera figured out the aperture size. Shooting in M would've let me choose a smaller aperture, which might have helped. I think PS won't help my pix because the blown out parts have lost their detail for good. :(

I found the mistake. ISO 2000. >.<

you can probably just blend the blown out parts into its surroundings. don't really need them much anyway. hardly anyone would notice the loss of details

Good idea! I'll give that a try and post the results.

I'm not talking about the blend tool

Yeah I know, I was using a brightness adjustment layer and a mask, then a soft brush to paint in the adjusted parts, but the results weren't good. The edges weren't natural. The smudge tool solve this either.

Needs some patience and luck I guess. Never been so good at these

what mode do you guys always use on your d7000?

Mostly aperture priority, unless I want to freeze stuff, then it's shutter priority. I'm a bit too disorganized to use fully manual.

Not a D7000 user, for me M mode most of the time. Changing shutter speed or aperture is easier than adjusting EV for me.
