D7000 Discussion Thread III

i managed to rent the D7000 as my backup cam for a wedding shoot yesterday and today.

and boy was i surprised at the ISO difference as compared to my Fuji S5 Pro. I have to step down from 640 to 400 on the D7k. I even had to switch my main cam, S5 Pro to the D7k at one point of time as the available light was vanishing fast. and having the Nikon 17-55 f2.8 on it makes it look funny. :bsmilie:

Fast focussing unlike my S5. I guessed technology has improved vastly..

But its a little small for my hands to have ease of use. I guessed having a battgrip would help. Its a good as a backup cam (IMHO) due to its light weight and good iso control.

Personally I feel that it is very good for wedding event shooting. The white balance is quite accurate. It is going to be wedding event photographers new lover. :D

Btw, all the owner of d7000. How is your outdoor shooting so far?
For mine... Overexposed and wash out seem to be common on 70% of my outdoor day shoots.
Spending hardtime correcting them. Luckily I shoot RAW.
Will post a few sample shoots soon.

normally for all my nikon DSLRs so far, i dial in -.3 into the EV to preserve the highlights, regardless whether i am shooting RAW or JPGs. mebbe you can try dat?

sir..this one you mean for outdoor shoots or general setting?

i also noticed that the D7k iso setting is so different from my S5 Pro.

seems like its iso400 is comparable to iso800 on my S5. yesterday i shoot in iso200 on the wedding dais, with ambient lighting under the block. am i disillusioned or what?

general. something dat i learnt a long time ago from an old CSer when i was first starting out. i suspect it is a leftover from the film days. but heck... since it works for me to prevent clipping, it has become a habit for me.

oh yes, s5pro's performance is (of course) different. s5 is 3-4 yr old cam (?). back then, it's high-ISO performance was great. i used to have it but gave it up when d300 came along. IMO, fuji DSLRs' colours right out of cam are still 2nd to none. but, i suspect when it comes to high-ISO performance against the latest generation of DSLRs, it is probably showing its age. then again, people shoot fuji for their colours. :)

Hey jack (mind me calling you this?), yes, there's overexposure on my photos. Most of the time, I set my exposure compensation (I using A mode) -0.3 to -1.0 since I get blown-out most of the time. Look like DPreview's comment on this was right. Didn't really need to set till -1.0 for D90 previously...

yes... I set it to -0.3 for outdoor...

btw, any of the D7000 owners also feel the same as me about the battery door? It is plastic feel and when you close it, you "don't feel" that it is closed... not so well-made.... :embrass:

Thanks. Previously I was doing +0.3 on other Nikon.
All the overexposed and wash out shoots was on 0 exposure compensation.

I use -0.3 on my d7000 after experiencing it on my first outdoor day shoot.
But got to say.. Still need quite a lot of post processing.

And for the Colourful wash out, maybe can try on vivid profile for all shoots. Will feedback.

U are currently trying on d7000 also?

nah.. D3 & D1x. but tempting to downgrade to a smaller body. u can try finding those free custom curves online that people made for their cams. i can't remember if D7000 can upload custom curves tho. i use the old D2x MODE I and MODE II curves in my D3. recently uploaded Velvia and Astia curves into it to try.

Hi everyone I am new to digital camera, bought this same camera and have this over expose problem when I shoot night photography at mbs, It may be due to my personal liking but its still manageable ,and in the end I hardly use any automation from this camera at all, and another problem was I have 3 ai lenses and at manual mode LV does not even have a exposure meter for me to control the exposure, and I have to switch between the mode in order to read the expo.
I have email to Nikon tech but does not know if there are adding the important feature to the live view mode, The live mode provide me quite a few info that I really don't need and imagine that a camera main live viewer does not give you EXPOSURE reading??? I have to toggle the Button just to read.
This feature is the only mistake I made buying this camera NIKON D7000.
And I have never thought I should check this kind silly thing like does it show the 'exposure', meter in live view.:sweat:
Thanks every one for reading.

No problem.

The worst case that I got from P mode, bright sun was -1.5. Omg. :(

The issue become worse if u try to fill light using flash when shooting facing sun light.
In my case... -1 for my flash compensation still got blown out on faces..

This will not be the case on d90.
Got to spend more time getting used to this new cam and doing tons of post processing.

It is just a dream to get nice jpg straight out from it. Or maybe I haven't get used to the very new behavior on it..

When you hit a road block, just go around it. To go around no +/- exposure with LV mode. a) In LV, set to A mode, see the suggested exposure, set manually in M mode. B) In viewfinder mode, set exposure accordingly, switch to LV to compose.

Win some, lose some. Lose D90 perfect out of box jpg. Lose D90 perfect exposure against sun and with fill flash. And 'tons of processing' according to some unhappy users.

I don't have experience with D90, but compared with my D300. The D7000 is a pleasure to use. Spot on LV manual focus. Good dynamic range. I can shoot -3 stops at iso 100 and bring back shadow details without bringing back noise.

I was considering to buy just the D7k body with tmron 17-50 non VC but after the discussion above i am having second thoughts.. is it sensible to get 17-50? also should i spen extra 300 bucks and get the VC version?

Hi, I'm new to clubsnap but not to photography. I own a D40X and planning to upgrade my body.

I read reviews about the D7k. Forget about hot pixels and images getting overexposed in bright light... but for those who have read the in-depth review in dpreview fully and other popular review websites, don't you think the colour production from d7k is a bit faded compared to others? http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond7000/page19.asp and http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Nikon_D7000/noise_JPEG.shtml will prove it.

I don't know what camera settings the reviewers have set at or if theres something wrong with my eye or that theres something wrong with the new sensor in the camera. Or is it just that the 18-105 kit lens (which is used in most reviews) is a bad lens? D7k users/testers, please advise on the colour production issue. Mods, pls feel free to put this under a new topic if you wish to cos I think this topic is getting way too long to navigate and to read all the user's opinions of the camera.

anyone knows where got stocks? colleague wanna buy

How come ?
If because of dynamic range, D7000 shouldn't be better in the range compared with D300.

Ya.. Like I said.. The photos look like washed out on Colour..
Human complextion looks pale.. :(
I tried vivid profile yesterday. Doesn't help much.
I got to edit majority of the photos in Photoshop.

I think I am about to give up d7k.
Nowander it doesn't deserve a gold award in dpreview.:(

If people asking me whether it worth upgrading to d7k from d90 for still photos, the answer is quite clear from me. It is a definitely a NO. Just my personnal oppinion..

I already refraining myself from commenting cause I'd end up bashing anyway, hoping someone sensible would clarify on the comparison in jpg, however, didn't expect someone to bash it directly without looking into more details -_-;;

Being shooting in jpg, you should know that you can make adjustments in-camera on how your photo should look like. Is it difficult to make a slight adjustment to the saturation setting?

Why not compare in RAW, that'd be easier. (referring to the comparison between 60D and D7000) :dunno:

As for D90, I agree with you that the colour is a little (just a little) more richer than D7000 (in raw), but not an issue for me. Anyway, that isn't even a problem in the first place :)

:bsmilie:Our jacky bro is back again with "washed out colour" now... look pale? Did you set the WB right? Can you show us some pic?

If you give up on your D7k, please sell it at a low price since you have "given up" on it and l am sure many many people will want to buy it...;p

Even it didn't get a Gold award, can a bad camera get silver??

Paul, don't worry about commenting the D7000. I agree with you that D7000's colour is not as rich as D90. But as you mentioned, it is not much of a difference and is at acceptable level for D7000... not so bad that people have to trade in their D7000 for a D90... maybe Jacky's words is a bit too strong...

I mentioned about "it is not clear whether you have closed the battery cover" issue... any bros feel the same?
