want range? - switch to DX mode...36-105

just a thought :D

perhaps someone can clarify - under DX mode, does the D700 capture only the APS-C sized image shown within the crop-indicators even though the lens is an FX lens?

if so, i think there's no need to switch to DX mode. we could just let the camera capture the full frame and then do a crop within Photoshop.

good point... will need to research this - unless someone gives me a d700 (and the manual) to explore :bsmilie:

Don't forget the Sigma 24-135mm and the Tamron 24-135mm. Both make good fx travel lens.

Happen to see a 28-105 on sale at CS marketplace...., maybe the seller whom is a nice gentleman saw this thread and decided that it is a good time to release this long forgotten lens :)

so just bought it and took a couple of shots to try it out........ well I look through some shots...

Preliminary observation on sharpness as compare to 24-70 at the centre..

28-105 F3.5~4.5 are a little soft... but once I step a stop down, the lens is razor sharp at the centre... but then again that does not surprise me as many "non-pro" len exhibit the same softness when wide open. in fact 1/2 stop down would have satisfy most pixel peeper :)

heh, for a under $500 lens.... I am not complaining... ( bought cheaper due to it being a used lens)

will take more shots to check on corner sharpness and color contrast.

If you are not those sooooooooo critical with distortion
Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4 AF-D is a good walk around lens

Example taken using D3 at ISO3200, f/4

On D700 and D3, you can easily bum up to ISO3200 and get very good quality
without flash and freeze the indoor event.

With macro capability, this is what you can get

Haven't both macro which can focus at 2cm, I find this lens quite versatile
given it can give u a range of 24-85

Okay... it doesn't have VR, so you better keep your shutter speed fast.
Day time ? No problem, night time, bum up your ISO and do NR using your
CaptureNX. If your target audience is on the net, basically resampling will
keep the noise down.
On D700 and D3, I find the noise generated are just pleasing instead of annoying.
So any ISO between ISO3200 and 6400 are fine, at ISO1600, it's just good to go
for prints.

If you are those photographers frequently covering indoor events, since you are
earning from the equipment, make sure you own the Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8
No excuse and no regret getting it. It's heavy and large, so unless u like weight lifting,
then I seriously advice u don't use it for your daily going around lens.

Besides... the lens is just way too attractive and attract alot of audience.
I personally find when you are taking photos, it's best if you and your camera is
invisible. It's BEST if no one notice there is a photographer and nikon camera in the scene
so that they are at their best composure and feel natural. Once you have a bulky
flash plus such a big and attractive lens roaming aroung, the magic are all gone.

I don't understand why people keep buying..... new cameras.... I think the D700 and the D3 is people who make a living out of photography.

Anyway.. thanks to you all, I get my D300 with 9months warranty for for $1.8k. :-}

Yes. The 28mm~105mm is the ultimate lens. Use it to shot a wedding and I get fantastic results on my D300. :-}

Buy lens... not camera. :-}

I think the 28-105 is a great lens on FX....

Took these with a D700 wide open

How's the corner performance? ;p

Agreed the 28-105 is one helluva lens for the money. Got mine last evening and tried some shooting this morning. Image is sharp at f/5.6 onwards and the macro function is more than usable! I compared to my tamron 28-75, which is sharper wide open, but the 28-105has better range, better macro and at lower stops, is just as good.

Cool lens! :)

Cheers

i have an old Nikon 35-80mm AF-D f4-5.6

that is quite handy if you do not shoot too wide

small and light

it is just walking distance from my office
so i go shot a few snaps before i go to work

also it is colourful and lots of details to check sharpness

Canon has a 24-105 f4L IS. What would be the closest Nikon equivalent?

Walk around: 24-85 f2.8-4 AFD or 24-85 f3.5-5.6 AF-S (I own and prefer the former because I like low light photography. Both are pretty light weight

Event: 24-70 f2.8. I wanna deliver the best pictures to the one paying me :)

the lock?

slight tone adjustment done (slightly brighter) why?

I think the 24-85mm is a good choice. Don't forget the 28-200 nikon. Saw the potential when I was buying a lens from a fellow cser. He tried my 28-200. Downside is the weight balance is not so nice as it's a relatively light lens to mount on the D700.
