D700 w/ SB-900 - issues?

Guys, must we put SB-900 inside the pouch provided?

Most of the times I just put inside my CAM bag without the pouch but padded. SB-900 consider big and with the pouch, I find its taking up more space.

Now must really re-think and handle my equipment with more TLC.

As a proper camera bag usually has adequate foam padded which protect the SB-900 at all sides, No Need to put the flash inside the pouch then put the pouch inside the camera bag.

Haha. Not sure if I can wait till early December for the SB700 to hit our shores. Wouldn't mind getting that. Don't need the bulk of the SB900.

Summary: The D700 hotshoe is said to be quite weak and cannot tolerate the extra bulk and torque generated by the SB900 after prolonged usage. After a while the contacts become loose and the flash will randomly fire intermittently.

Wondering if anyone here has experienced that...

I noticed that the intermittent firing problem does not happen easily with lighter flash like SB600.
So maybe the weight of the SB900 is also a factor contributing to the problem.

Here's what I did to my friend's D700
I cleaned the contacts inside and replace the hot-shoe using the D70s hot shoe and add threadlock
(There's no complains with D70s hot shoe so this could solve the problem)

Problem solved :D
