looking at your signature, you got plenty nice lens there...... no way you could resist D3 or D700.

Nice to have u on board the D700 ship, hope u love the performance of the camera and the lens and it does take sometime getting use to the weight of the camera, after all its 2kg

tbh, whilst i like its capabilities - a nice return to my film slr days, flexibility in available light shooting conditions - i dont really like my d700.
i've become very used to the very rugged and very capable bodies of the D2 range, i own both the D2H and D2X.
The D200 and D300 never appealed to me, and the D700 really does sit inbetween the D300 and D3 for me.

i'd like a D3 with the little improvements the D700 had.

i have the vertical grip and i use my en-el4 batteries, so i have the 8fps and bulk, but it just doesnt feel the same. just doesnt feel like it would take the abuse my beloved D2's have [and they are pretty messed up..].

what stopped me from getting the D3 though, was simply that my job situation changed and i could no longer justify the expenditure on that model when i wasnt shooting pro jobs anymore..

without the grip it was too small and too light. with the grip its awkwardly bulkier than my D2's though..

its saving grace is the speed of operation with the grip and with a lot of the main components from the D3 being incorporated rather than the cut-down approach the D200/D300 had.
