Hi fellow D700 user,

just to check, most of the DSLR (the ones I have D70, D60, D200, D300) shows the picture right after you have taken the shot. However for the D700, you have to press the play button in order to have the pictures out on the LCD.

Is this normal or am I missing some kind of settings?

yes u can missing a setting, go read your manual on how to set it
