Oh, I have just found out one of my lens has fungus growing, double heart pain ..... how much is cleaning the lens ?

I am guessing here, but if they can (recently) quote me $85 for a 20mm/2.8 AIS, and $75 for a 55mm Micro-Nikkor, both fairly simple lenses to take apart and reassemble, a complex zoom with AF will likely be more.

Just give Nikon a call and ask. It's better to get rid of the fungus ASAP.

my friend had is 10D in the bag and he was riding throu the rain and 10 D dot wet.. imagine the mode dial is seep into it when we use the blower to blow out the water .. maybe blow in also..'

that day used still okie.. shoot firework,.. no prob.. after that Reacon 4 liao... but he sent in for repair .. now still can use

Blowing at the gaps is always a bad idea. Suction is a better one.

Which is why, leaving the camera with all hatches open inside an airtight container with a lot of dessicant is the best thing to do IMO. Leave the the camera in there for a week or so.

i think for the camera, you should really give a try to dry it. cos its mineral water spill, not saltwater. very high chance of recovering.:)

Hi Clubsnappers,

Thank you very much for your valued advises!
But, I have actually switched on the camera when the water is still in the camera.
So , think my D70 is really RIP rite ?
If drying the camera thoroughly can have a minor chance to revive it, I will definitely try it.
Afew hundred bucks I am willing to pay, hopefully is below 500 bucks .... Its my 1st DSLR, so not going to neglect it just like that.
Hungry hippo or silicon gel more effective ?

From understanding, as the PCB is multi-layer, the copper lines will get corrode in 1-2days time. Not to mention, is the water you spill, mineral or distill water? If it is distill water, the PCB corrode even faster as it reacts faster on distill water. This can be easily seen on the PCB as water patches, thus no point drying from outside and try to send in to NSC to pass off for general servicing. On look by an experience technician can tell that water have entered into the camera.

My advise is that, if you can, pop open the camera and dry directly using tissue, remember to clear away the water drying marks that might be on the PCB. You might run a better chance in saving it. Next then send in to NSC for check up.

In all cases, if you need to change the main PCB, you might as well pay for a new body, as the repair cost is not going to be cheap.

As for your lens, the 24-120VR lens would cost more to clean as compared to the 18-70DX. Due to the fact of the VR module.

One question in mind... is it that your lens got fungus due to the water spill or it just got fungus due to poor maintainence? Do you have a dry cabinet, preferably a electric one?

Sorry if I'm too straight, but that is the fact from past experiences of water spillage on other electronic components and appliances. :)

Dude... i think you need to know how to take care of your gear man... get a dry box and keep the water away from your gear....

Oh its tap water. The water bottle was not screwed properly so it spill onto the the DSLR in the bag ......
Yes, worst come to worst, I may have to buy a new DSLR then ...... its a very painful lesson to learn though.
But, will still trying drying it for a week before I send it to NSC for servicing.

My len fungus is due to poor maintenance of my dry box though. No water involved.
Have not change the silicon gel for quite some time .....

Think will invest on a dry cabinet. Any cheap and good brand to recommend ?

Thanks guys for the advises! I will be super careful next time with my gears.

yeah.. die die must get a dry cabinet... otherwise, most of your gear will have fungus....

I think from time to time, people will organise MO for digi cabi in CONSUMER CORNER.. keep a look out.

Dude... if you are spending thousands for DSLR, why cramps for dry cabinet? Try to get a decent one. For me, I don't cut corner on drybox. What's the point of saving a few bucks when you are storing thousands dollar worth of things inside? :)

Roger, will go hunt for a dry cabinet. Thanks.

Never put your DSLR together with your water bottle in the same bag. Try putting them in a different bag.

Try Carrefour, I got my electric dry cabinet from there for $88 about 2 years back:thumbsup:  . They always have it at very low price. Can check it out.:)

Can go Digital Point at Suntec (near to Carrefour).

I bought the Digi-Cabi 60L (the bigger the better) for $169 w free delivery a few months back.

Good luck on the sunbathing for your D70.

Just came back from lunch, saw one shop at Tanjong Pagar Plaza at 2nd level selling this Brand name Rodex 56 litre electric dry box now selling at $169. Seems that they are the distributor for this brand Rodex. Bigger ones cost around $1K plus.

$1k???

That would be huge!!

Dry Cabi (a popular dry cabinet brand here) cost around $120 for a 30L. If you are lucky some shops are still caring the old promo stocks from last year $99. Comes with 3years warranty. You just have to hunt around.
