hmm for me my 2 must bring out lens is 35mm and 50mm hahahaha

Hi i just brought mine 5100 as well and today was the first day of shooting,
2 of my SD card show "This memory card cannot be used. Card may be damaged.Insert another card"
i had check the possible reason in the instruction menu for this sympton but i believe none might be the reason as i am
able to acess the card on my Pc and also the card can be read on my camera after i delete away the file inside.

I'm thinking whether to get AF-S 35mm 1.8G or AF-S 50mm 1.8G as my 1st prime lens other than the kit lens.
It's gonna be used for taking more portrait shots.
Understand that the 35mm seems better for indoors as the 50mm is abit tight. Especially I'm gonna take shots of my partner sitting opposite me on the dining table or shots of food etc.
Tested the 35 n 50mm range using my kit lens and felt the difference.
Anyone knows how's the bokeh difference for these two lens?

joemit7850: did you try formatting the card using your camera?

holyark: check out kenrockwell's site. he should have some pictures for these 2 lenses.

Budget in a dry cabinet to store your items. A carrying bag if required. N a uv filter if required as well. Read up the newbie sticky if u do not know what filters r used for.
As for where to buy, chk out the price guides. The recommended shops are listed. Call them up for a quote when u r about to purchase.

You can buy the D5100 with kit lens at $990 nett from TK Photo or SLR Revolution. Add in about $150 for a dry box and you should be good to go.

It happen to me too :( shoot until halfway, the sceen show a message "This memory card cannot be used. Card may be damaged.Insert another card" but the card can be read from my PC. It happen to me when I am on oversea trip :( I have to buy a new card on the spot and get back to hotel to realise the card can be read from my notebook .... wasted $ and retaking photo at those places. After that I notice the small pre-view photo is not the same as when you open the photo?? I since formatted the card and use it without any problem.... hope it will not happen again :(

Any other people have this experience?

Thinking to switch the kit 18-55mm to the 18-105mm at the store. The store offers an extra battery. Not sure if this extra battery is necessary as I don't think I shoot so many shots. Any opinions on the extra battery.

extra battery (fully charged) is a must, I am sure you don't want to end up with no more battery in the mid of your shooting trip.... :)
I got myself an extra battery and get a 2nd hands 18-105

Yup, extra battery is a must! Then u can have ease of mind when traveling. Just shoot happily anytime anywhere.

I have this problem also with my 32GB Transcend card.
Formatted on PC then when used in the camera its ok. After sometime when I try to shoot again, it will show the error.

This card works perfectly fine on my canon PnS camera though.

In the end I stuck to my 2 Sandisk 8GB cards.

Better use a reliable card than to loose your photos. Follow this link for approved memory cards:

It's always good to format the card in your camera rather than pc. That way, the format is always correct. I only format my card in camera. Using mixture of transcend n sandisk in my d7000, have not encountered this problem before.

You can't format the card in the camera if it shows "This memory card cannot be used. Card may be damaged.Insert another card.".....

If that's the case, format on pc, put it into your cam n format again. I believe that message appeared because the formatting was not correct.

If u check your manual, it would have advised to format your card if u have formatted it in other devices. This is to ensure maximum compatibility with the file format of your camera.

Yeah, I did try that method, use PC first then put in the camera and reformat.

Anyway, no matter what method I use to make it work, the first time I shoot it will always be fine, after I off the camera and turn on and try to take again, it will show the error.

The simple fact is, this transcend card of mine will not be reliable enough for use by my D5100. No problem encountered with my Sandisk cards so far. Don't tell me that its my camera problem. It happened to my sister's D5100 and my friend's D3100 as well.

Anyway, its no longer a problem to me. I'm not the one asking for help. Was just trying to let ctm1968 know that I had the same problem.

Ur transcend card still under warranty? If so, I'll say get it changed.
