D5100 user...fall in!! Part Two

i'm using 32GB on D7000. almost 1 year liao, no problem.
I got mine from Memory World last year, @ $99.

Last price check (about 3 weeks back) was $52.90 from House of Mouse.

yeah, the price is around there as well from challenger. was contemplating to get that as well, at least time lapse can get more raw files saved into it. maybe this IT show will check around. what brand were you using? thanks.

thought we have been talking about Transcend all this while?

hahaha... anyway, I'm using Transcend 32Gb Class 10 in slot 1, Sandisk 16Gb class 6 in slot 2 of my D7000.
Slot 1 --> Raw files
Slot 2 --> jpeg & videos (rarely shoot videos)

With this combo, I can clock about 1k pictures before they get filled.

oohh..ya hor.....hhmm..2 slots r really helpful....don't make me regret not getting the D7000 over the D5100 ley....

I need some help on hot shoe flash but can't find any information over the internet, so I hope anyone here please help me.

For example night portrait shooting, I went to a dark place which need 1/10, f1.8 and ISO3600 only can get correct exposure(based on light meter on D5100).

But I don't want such high ISO and slow shutter speed, so I placed my external flash on hot shoe. So now here is my question,

I don't see any improvement on light meter, I still need the same value as above to get correct exposure. What should I do? Normally I just ignore the light meter even though it shown under expose. I set ISO to 800, shutter speed 1/60 and aperture f1.8, then I just shoot the photo (TTL). Is that correct way? I expect if external flash installed, it should show me some hand held capability setting but it's just the same.

Your camera metering would still be inaccurate even you mount on your flash. A lot of times would depend on your experience. Depend your location, is it open area or indoor. If it is indoor, is the ceiling high or low.

Hhmm....ya hor, i've been using it n taking for granted the flip. But apart from that, 2 slots, more af points, builtin motor....aarrgghh......hopefullu D800 is within reach.....

Hey, guys... I have one question to ask D5100 Senior...

What is the data transfer rate of D5100 with the SDHC card?
and
Which class SDHC card would you guys recommending, Class 6 or Class 10? If the data transfer rate is not so high, then will go for the class 6.

good qn bro. me too was wondering but it slipped off my mind cos currently using 16Gb class 4 seems to be ok but then again, doing long exposure shots takes a long time to process. dunno if its due to the card or its a normal thing...

hmm...in my point of view, data transfer rate is "almost equivalent" to which class of card you use.

If you are doing video shoots or RAW files, I'd say use Class 6 and above.
If you are going to do continuous shoot, a faster card will get you more pictures compared to a slower card.

Remember:
Camera capture --> camera buffer --> memory card

If the buffer does not clear fast enough to memory card, your camera stops recording.

Are you shooting in Jpeg? Usually the long wait for processing after long exposure is due to the noise reduction within camera and the processing of the Jpeg image.

no bro. i'm mainly shooting in RAW now. n i guess u r right cos mostly i shoot at night nowadays.....

Hmm not sure what's the reason if you are shooting in raw. I only use a Kingston class 4 card and write speed is pretty fast for long exposures, almost instantaneous. D7000 and D5100 write speed shouldn't be that different.

hhmm...maybe i'll observe it again cos usually i used 10s timer plus the long exposure then i leave it until it finished but never really observe the time when it closes the shutter n write on the card....

From my understanding, if you turn on the long exposure noise reduction feature then it will take double time. For example if long exposure NR feature on then you expose for 30 seconds, it will take 60 seconds to complete it.

I don't think it's due to memory card because no matter long exposure or short expose, photo memory size almost the same only. So speed of memory writing only affected if file size too big or burst too many photo in short time. By the way long exposure sure take a bit longer to process. :)
