both d5k and d3k are great options, forget about the d60 cause the 3 AF-points will be a pain if you do plenty of low-light photography unless you use the focus and recompose method to counter this problem.
That aside, the reason why I'm looking at Nikon is coz my gf is totally hooked on my D90 and wouldn't settle for anything less. But being an entry-shooter, I feel that getting another D90 is an overkill. Weight is another factor for her. D3k seems to be the lightest SLR model produced by Nikon so far. That's the reason why i factored in D3k.
If budget is not a factor, I recommend you get the D5000. The D90 sensor is extremely good and that will be the deciding factor. It is also lighter and slightly smaller.
D3000 is a good choice if you want to rein in your budget a bit. At $870 for a kit, it priced very good now. The D40/40x/60/3000 are all good cameras capable of wonderful shots.
Anyway good luck with your purchase.
I second this. 3 AF points
thus i chose the d5000. but that was before d3000 came out, so i had a simpler choice......
Im D60 user.. I agree bout the 3 AF point.. Its realy difficult to use in low light condition.. Need to do some editing after taking..
but Its not that D60 is bad.. in term of price, its cheaper.. Specs..?? should learn how to control e camera 1st then go upgrade to better 1.. No need buy new 1.. 2nd hand also can, as long as its mint n warranty still valid.. While practicing with D60, save Money for ur future better camera.. Anyway who knows next year gonna come out camera better than D3k n D5k at rather cheap price..
Thats actually my plan lha.. just want to share..cheers
TS, you mentioned your gf wouldn't settle for anything lesser than D90. What does she means by anything? Maybe you have to ask her to be more specific.
If it's about the sensor size then I guess the choice is obvious among the 3 you shortlisted.

For guys is ok, we can lug equipment ard... for ladies (in general), they would want it to be light and 'not so bulky'...
Pardon if i digress away from Nikon, maybe can intro her to Panasonic G1 (or even wait till GF1 is out). My gf is using and loving it, got it as a second-hand for ard 750+. It's a micro four thirds but i must say the picture quality is really not bad! (of course based on my noobie eyes) Best of all it's lightweight and really handy for a gal to carry it around with them, almost like a compact (at least that's what happening to our outings now, she carries it around to almost anywhere we go but i would sometimes keep my dslr at home). No harm letting your gf try it out in shops.
Just my 2 cents worth of sharing![]()
Pic quality wise, D3000 or G1 are also excellent. DSLR is a different class from prosumers and PnS. Capable of very good shots with low noise. But that all depends on the person behind the camera, and the person doing the PP.
It is not like you will be shortchanging you or your gf by going for a D3000 instead of a D5k or D90.
I second to that. I tried playing with D5k and D3k, I tried ISO1600 on both, D5k clearly win by a few hundred times. D3k is super pixellated. Do not buy D3k, I confirm you will regret it big time.
Can Nikon D3000 body can use tamron or tokina nikon mount lens???
Yup. All can mount and meter in P S A M modes. For Auto-focus, AF is only possible with those with built in focus motor. LIke Sigma HSM, Tamron BIM (built-in-motor). Manual focus works fine, and the electronic focus indicator will work also.
that's why the lens are more exp also
but then again, D5000 is onli about 200 plus cheaper den d90 so its all very hard to choose.
