Apparently the shop has only 2 boxes of d40 for sale.... check it out at Sitex.... the camera felt very light..... actually i am more interested in d50.

Know the shop to get the best price?

cheers.

then you must be the fast in SG to sight the D40... apparently it is not even shown in the sitex product list by cnet

D40 is available at MS Colour today for less than $1000. Florence expects her stocks to be sold out over the weekend. Someone was testing it while I was there in the evening. The image output looks extremely sharp, perhaps due to default sharpening settings as well as the 6mp. I would have grabbed it immediately if not for the fact that it doesn't support screw-thread AF lenses, which means half of my lenses cannot be used on D40. Haha.

According to Florence, D50 is no longer available from Nikon Singapore, so you might need to look around for existing stocks.

Looking for 2nd hand 350D liao... I dun think it will be a Nikon this Christmas

You will be very mistaken about the quality and price of the D40. Today, I bought a D40.. not for myself though.

940 with 5% GST is going to bring you to about 980.00. NIkon's cost to the shops is about 940.00-960.00. You must not forget the other costings like importing cost and other cost.

I would think that for 980.00-1080.00 its a good price. Before you make a comparison with the D50.. I would suggest you go and feel the D40.

Its a really amazing camera, for its size. It comes with a free 1GB Sandisk standard SD-Card.

So all in all I think its a great price. its about 250.00 dollars more expensive then some of the 7MP P&S.

Cathay's price was 1080.00, I am sure that if you have some good relationship with them, the price can go down to who knows how much.

Also.. lets say with 12month interest-free credit, that about 80.00 per month.

Why get a second hand camera, when you can get a brand new camera.

If the D40 is just a little cheaper than the outgoing D50 in price, it sounds like poor value to me. Err... a watered down or deliberately crippled spec for almost similar money? No thanks. Looks like I'll be recommending the Pentax K100D to my visiting Aussie friend next week.

Why discontinue the D50? Maybe the D50 has reached the end of the model's life. Or perhaps Nikon needs to exaggerate the specification between their entry level D40 and their mid-range D80. Want more features..., pay more money... With no D50 being produced, would be Nikon's buyers on a tight budget got no choice but to buy the D40. :sticktong

this is funny, i went to sitex, and ask the nikon personel whether they have D40, they shook their head and say its not out yet. what the hell..

looking at the price, i guess its either a second D50/70s or a Canon 350D

Crippled? Hardly. The D40 gives a very different feel. The interface is now very interesting. The D50 is at its current price at 2 years. You should remember the launch price of the D50. It was NOT that cheap.

I would expect that if you wait 6-8months the D40 price may drop to sub 950.00 with the SD card free.

As I have said in a post above. Go try the camera out. I am not if you have. But after I tried it out, I was most happy to part with the money for the D40.

TOday you are getting a very good camera for sub 1K SGD, with a 2.5" LCD, very intuitive interface. I will not comment about the image quality much yet, as I have not shot a series of images with it yet.

Also, you should read the D40 manual. Its a really nice manual, that is really targetted at beginners.

All in all, i think its a wonderful camera to hold in your hands, very firm grip.

As I posted earlier, go try it out.

Have fun..

Hmmmm,

this time round, Nikon is pretty fast in the launch and delivery...

Well I believe you paid the list price of $1088. Good for you.
Sure the D40 is gonna be different from the D50, it's a newer model. However looking at the camera's specifications versus the present retail price, I can't help feeling the D50 offers better value despite the fact it is model that's been around since it's introduction in mid-2005. And if you compare the D40 to the current Pentax K100D, another 6 mp camera that is rumoured to have a similar sensor as the now discontinued D50, the Pentax can be obtained cheaper, shoots nice images as well and one gets vibration reduction thrown in. "More bang for the buck" as the saying goes.

Incidentally don't know where you got the idea that Nikon's cost to the shops is "about 940.00-960.00"? That's about just under 15% margin from the list price. How can any shop survive with that kind of margin? It's too low. Whatever price consigned by the shops is definitely lower than that, not to mention any trade allowance offered by Nikon. Anyway good luck on you new purchase.

Lol... I would probably never buy another camera from exhibitions liao... I always thought such events would give extra discounts...
