Nikon's cost to retailers for the D40 is at $850 SGD w/o GST
Wow, care to share how you managed to obtain this figure? I always thought that the price that Nikon or any other company offers to retailers is a guarded secret. Frankly I would have expected an even lower amount.

Many retailers do not push Nikon products because the profit margin is not as high as other brands.

i wouldnt openly disclose how i got that figure, but its accurate as far as i'm concerned ;) that price is mainly for exclusive Nikon dealers, all other retailers gets a cost price of $900 SGD w/o GST.

not just profit margin, theres simply too little returns for the company who pushes Nikon products and Nikon isn't doing much to encourage retailers to promote their products either.... the price is yet another issue as Nikon dSLRs are oftenly priced above its competition with lower mega-pixel offerings which makes it easier for a salesperson to promote a higher mega-pixel dSLR at a lower cost.... afterall many dSLR buyers still suffers from the stigma of higher mega-pixel = higher quality photos

its much easier to sell a Canon 400D than to sell a Nikon D80 ^^

Unfortunately.. thats a problem in Singapore.. and not in the US. The amount of rebates Nikon gives in the US, really makes selling Nikon worthwhile.

I have bought several camera's from the US with the help of friends and using the US rebates.. shipped via V-post.. and it ends up being 250-350 cheaper then in Singapore.

how is the warranty (buy from US)? is all nikon camera carry international warranty?

quite true. People like CP who commit to large number of sets of Nikon products get a extra 5% profit margin. People like Song Brothers who are not able to do so have higher cost price.

Just tried out my friend's D40 yesterday. Feels really good and takes great pics. Got used to changing the settings almost immediately. I was thinking of upgrading from D50 to D80 or D200 but this little camera is keeping me undecided.

that is so not true, in fact their profit margin is usually at around $100+ and i personally think that is not an unreasonable amount, unless you're the kind that is only willing to let a company profit like $30 for all the effort it has done to get the camera to you.

Profit margin is never by $100 flat rate... It is by percentage... Digital cameras and accessories are always by at least 30%...

I think Nikon only sells at a much cheaper price to their authorised dealers listed in their website and the non-authorised dealers have to get their stocks from the authorised dealers causing the profit margin to be smaller? :dunno:

Earning just $100 from a DSLR is really going to put a lot of shops out of business... P&S profit would be smaller... They ain't selling tau pok where they can sell for quantity to get profits high enough to survive...

Just does not make sense to me...

Erm... D40 is really a very different beast from the D80 and D200...

If the D40 is keeping you undecided... Maybe you don't really need D80 and D200?

I guess the D50 would have been adequate for your style of photography. Why not invest the $$ in a good lens? Just a suggestion... :D

how is the warranty (buy from US)? is all nikon camera carry international warranty?

For camera bodies.. its local US warranty. However for lenses and speedlights.. its international warranty.

Where to get the $950 D40 har? TIA!:)

J316 Had at least one on Sat...may be gone by now.

I tested it out then and was quite impressed by the photos it captured. The overall feel was nice too, if you ignore its size. I was very tempted to get for my kid who's been chucking his IXUS aside to grab at my D200 these days. :bsmilie:
