and was at TCW to try out a 2nd hand one on the D40x, and it focuses well, and the pictures are sharp.... the 2nd hand lens at that time was going for $450.

the only reason I tried to sell my D40 is to buy my friends D200 and not because of some limitations of the camera as I still haven't explored it much. but my friend upped his price for his D200 so decided to stick with the D40.

Feel abit strange though. Just a few months ago I was saying that I would never buy a D80, it was either D40 or D200, D80 was in no mans land.
Guess I was wrong, or maybe the retail/re-sell value has dropped. (I bought mine for $1100 second hand).

However, I will makle this statement to prospective buyers who are planning to get a camera for the first time.
1. buy a D40. (Around $650 2nd hand, $850 new) Even with the 2nd hand D80 body selling for around $1200, you have to factor in the cost of a lens. If you buy the kit, it will cost you around $1.7k. (the only reason I can buy stuff for $1200 is because I already have lenses and just need a body) Total Cost=$650
2. If you don't want to buy a D40, then I suggest you skip the D80 and buy a 2nd hand D200 for $1800, and an AF-S 18-55mm lens (D40 kit lens) for $120. Total Cost=$1920

D80 Cost=$1600. Still, the D40 and D200 option is more worth it.

Beside, I am use to just one centre spot focusing and playing with ISO,Shutter Speed and Aperature. So, the additional focusing points and the programs in the D80 means nothing to me. I also have the Nikon 70-300VR, SB-600 Flash and I just bought a SB-400 because it looks small and handy. I got Omni bounce for both SB-400 and SB-600. I am still warming up with my D40x and look forward to sharing any info with all the D40/40x user out there.

where and how much did you buy your 18-200mm VR?

with your 18-200 VR, how often do you use focal lengths from 70mm to 200mm?

Bought my 18-200VR from CP for $1,280 w/GST. 70-200mm is handy if you need to take portrait or take a shot without the subject ( like kid ) noticing it. But what I really like is the VR. I can take night scene without bringing tripod.

The D200 battery life is slightly worse than the D40/x. The D40/x sure has a really good batt life... I expected more whan I switched to D200 in terms of batt life as the batt was also bigger! But well...

mostly when taking shots of people on stage or objects far away without disturbing them. the extra range is good to have, no need to cry when there is a need to shoot further but don't have the range available.

I love this camera (D40) - small, light, superb kit lens, crisp pictures! I have recently printed a group photo 8R (8" X 10") with some cropping and the resolution is fantastic. If anyone thinks 6 MP is insufficient for average use, it sure is enough for me. Next upgrade is probably a SB600.

I thanked my friend who gave me this D40 again. BTW, he has upgraded to D40X.
