D40 users come in!

hi there,i just got a d40 a couple of mths back,didnt manage to go through e previous pages to check if this question has been asked before,but are there af-s lenses(that d40 can only auto focus with) that are made by 3rd party lens companies?

Yes... they are by Sigma. Tamron and Tokina currently do not make any. Check out the following:

yup..sigma makes a few of them with the D40 in mind. you got to look for the HSM lenses

Hey Amaury and dreamzcape, care to share ur experience using the 50mm f/1.4 and f/1.8 respectively?
Is it hard to mf on the D40/x?

Mine is a very old lens from my father, I can only use it in M mode, which means a little bit of trial and error at the beginning in a given environment.
Apart from that MF is not too difficult, the viewfinder lets you see very well what's sharp or not and I usually don't get blurry shots. The green dot is also an indication that you're close to being good (though sometimes you should trust the vf only).

For instant shots, capturing short moments, it's probably not a good choice (especially because it's impossible to use A or S in fact), but it works great for portraits and low-light pictures when you don't want to use the flash (indoors, at parties etc) and where being a bit slow to react is no big deal.

I also love the shallow DOF with the nice blur around at f/1.4. I couldn't afford a new Nikon f/1.4, I'm very glad I have this one. It also looks really strange when mounted (1969 design on a brand new slr )

Not sure what that meant :think: I'm pretty happy with my 50mm f/1.4, it extends my range of shooting opportunies a lot because of the aperture, and I'm quite surprised a 40 years old piece of equipment works with a new camera. Of course, A and S would have been nice but heh..
I have computer equipment from pretty much all eras, and I'll be damned if I can do anything useful by plugging even a 10 years old thing into a new computer (I do keep them for sentimental reasons though).
