A question for the helpful community out here...

I read from somewhere that a 50mm lens is somewhat similar to human eye vision. Do they mean mounted on a full frame (WYSIWYG) or with 1.5 crop factor?

If I were to use it on D40, wouldn't that mean 75mm? So to achieve an equivalent of human vision, I need to get a 20mm lens?

TIA!

Correct. But not quite 20mm. Anyway there is a Sigma 30mm out there.

Have to say sadly here that I would probably (still contemplating) leaving the D40 community soon and head for the D80 community as Psycho has done. (I need to use a f/1.8 f/1.4 lens with autofocus enabled, but the Sigma 30mm is to expensive for me to stomach, and my D2x is too heavy for me to lug around everywhere)

Black speck on your viewfinder? Then it should not show on the LCD or pictures. Use a small tipped lenspen to clean it. It happened to mine too, not easy to clean cos the viewfinder is like recessed into the rubber eyecup.

Prob on his MIRROR, on on the underside of his penta-mirror. Doubt it's in the viewfinder.

why do u need to get a d80 when f/1.8 or f/1.4 lens prime lens is normally quite light, ard 0.4kg maybe. it should go well with ur d2x ;p

So to get 50mm on an APS I should get primes between 20-30mm? Thanks, the guru speaketh! Btw, anyone knows the cost of a Sigma 30mm HSM?

Yeah, saw you putting up for sale in the B&S... sad lah! From Psycho, Evopilot to you (did I miss out anyone?)

Think the lens will disappear in his D2x!:bsmilie:

on APS, a 35mm lens should well represent one's fiew of vision, which's probably known to be abt 46mm on viewing through a 35mm format cam.

on a 1.5x crop, 30 to 35mm will be good.

Cannot autofocus on D40.. if for anything except shooting moving subjects (I have time to manual focus) I don't mind. But I need the autofocus.

Quite a few I think. Those were the ones who bought D40 and within a week decided that D40 "not good enough"

Psycho was right-around 30mm-35mm lens. 30mm Sigma HSM around $650

You haven't seen Psycho's (his dream lens) 45mm AI-P lens on a D2x (was that the correct one psycho?)

hi all d40/x users!

Just wondering if any of you have any experience with the 50mm f/1.8 prime. I am aware that I can only use manual focus on it but i'm not sure whether or not it is a good buy? Searched through the forums and overall impression is not bad but sure if it's the same if put in perspective of having to use MF so just wondering if any first hand experiences here. Thanks! :)

Well, I would say it may be more limiting. I was quoted $790 for the Sigma... was pretty surprised that 3rd party primes could be that expensive!:complain:

Googled it... no wonder they're called pancakes!

The Sigma lens is a f/1.4 lens... and has a HSM motor. I was comtemplating to buy one some time back, and was at TCW to try out a 2nd hand one on the D40x, and it focuses well, and the pictures are sharp. It is a nice lens, but personally a tad too expensive. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 also has a peeling problem, and the one at TCW had that problem... so if you remove all the "peel" away... it somehow looks like a cool metallic body lens ;)

Oh... the 2nd hand lens at that time was going for $450.

Offcially, I have sold my D40 away and getting a D80 in 2 hours time.
However, I will still support this thread, and if anyone wants to organise a D40 outing I'll be there to help out (well, I hope psycho has some free time).

its fun to MF ;)

needs some getting used to i suppose. as long as you get your working distance right, your pre-focussing, and your aperture, its not difficult to go OOF

heh. very cute lens... suprisingly sharp too. but its more of a want than a need

given the qualities of zooms these days i might prefer a f2.8 zoom over a f2.8 prime. only turning to primes when they go wider in aperture for the effect :embrass:
