MIC = made in china

try those close up filters up to +4 that should be fine.. above that its a bit more difficult to get good results..

a +4 filter will reduce the focus distance by 4 times, so for your 50mm, instead of 45cm+ its now 11cm+ focus distance

extension tubes are harder to use cuz they result in light loss and on manual focus with the light loss on a slower lens its a bit difficult to achieve good results. most people use extension tubes with macro lenses for more magnification, not on normal lenses

hi thanks for explaining the diff between the 2 for me  as I've speedlite, I'm ok with the light loss. i got myself the tube, and +2 filter, that gives me 1:1 magnification. The guy in the shop said that using filter it's not as sharp. is it true? ;p

anyway... will save up for 60mm macro lens if my interest in macro didn't die down :sweatsm:

I realise it's really hard to avoid handshake than anything else..

yup.. filter not as sharp but +2 is fine. the higher, generally image quality will deterioriate

handshake is inevitable cuz the closer you get to the subject, or when you are taking something small.. small movements are very apparent.

Tamron builds 'D40-friendly' 18-250
Tamron has announced a new version of its popular 18-250 superzoom with an in-built focus motor evidently aimed at users of Nikon's D40 and D40x DSLRs. These two cameras lack legacy lens support in the form of a mechanical focus coupling - an omission widely criticized due to the reduced range of available lenses. Other specs appear to be unchanged from the existing version. Due to go on sale in Japan on December 13th, pricing and worldwide availability are yet to be announced.

It's a sooner or later thing.. Unlike Nikon and Minolta, Canon EOS opted for an electrical coupling by omitting the motor in the body and putting their motor in the EF lenses instead, eliminating the mechanical coupling. If 3rd party variants of the same lens for Canon EF mount can have a motor in them, there is no reason why they could not quickly put motors for Nikon mount variants too.

happy user of the D40 ... at first i tot i wont get used to the smaller size body but i am wrong , the grip is so well design and the viewfinder is gd for a dx cam ... no problem doing manual focus also . ISO is surprisingly clean at iso1600 .

Some of my humble shots taken with the D40+1870+10.5 below , most night scene and closeup taken with iso1600-3200 with no noise reduction post processing done .

nice pictures.. can see that you are putting the functions of the d40 to very good use :)

will it come with VR or OS like feature?

Doesn't looks like it. It would be kinda shame to have such lens without OS feature.

Hi Guys

I was thinking of getting a used D40/40x as a first DSLR.

This might sound weird but kindly advise me from your experience or learning curve if this is the right camera to start off with as I am not sure if I would sustain my photography interest in a year or 2.

Also if I were to buy a used one what is the fair price, please PM me. Thanks

Hi! I'm really inspired by your photographs! :)

By the way, I've posted a question thread regarding whether to buy a 2nd hand D70s to complement my D40x (for the faster flash sync, faster shutter speed as well as bigger image sensor... pardon me if I got it wrong... read the spec on Nikon website), any advice for me?

Bigger sensor? Faster shutter speed? :dunno:
the only reason I will say buy D70 is because of the screw drive and the flash's comnmander mode. Shutter speed-how fast you want to go?!!! the max I have gone is 1/2000 sec I think.. why would you need anything faster than that, practically speaking

i dont really see a point in getting the d70s, although its a good camera.

maybe you can consider getting a d80 body instead and then get a d40 body as a spare body.

by the time you get a d80 i dont think you need much of any other camera to complement it unless you are going for manual focus

its a common scenario to shoot faster when shooting with a f1.4 for the bokeh in well lighted conditions. sometimes i hit the 1/8000 mark at iso 100..

it will be a problem if one is using a d40 that is iso200 lowest, but d40x has the advantage of iso100
