Should the option "AE Lock" in Menu be "Off" or "On"? Default is 'Off' so pressing the shutter halfway does not lock exposure? I though it's better to lock exposure when half pressed?

Pls advise on what i should set it to.

Depends. If you're comfortable with locking exposure with the AF, then nby all means turn it on. I prefer to use the AEL button for exposure lock. Otherwise, I'll just set shutter speed and aperture manually, (which may be a bit more troublesome for D40/X).

i notice for my cam, the AF point is normally the center one (coz i set it tt way). Can it ever AF using all 3 points?

so for landscape, u recommend trying matrix too?

In sports and moving object, the you can set the focus to the one nearest object, and that is where the 3 points comes in. You can't focus on all 3 points, but it can detect which point to focus on.

For landscape... you can use matrix mode, unless yoru landscape has a lot of shadows in it... well... give it all a try don't have to develop film and can see immediate results... what a wonderful way to learn!

I think the poster was asking about body alone, not the kit. I don't think they sell just the D40 body alone. Can only find it in B&S

seriously if you bought from the states, the d40 kit can be had for abt 480 usd brand new.

the refurbished units are 400 usd brand new there abouts right now.

You use a D40 with 17-55mm? Glad your strap didn't break! You can add a hand grip anytime, CP is selling the grip by Camera Armor for $70. There're other brands too.
