Haha.... Actually more of the feeling like everyone were discussing how to shoot etc on their higher end models and I was probably the only one with a D40 there.

Anyway, when there was sharing on shooting techniques and how to do this and that, it was all centered on the D200s, D2x/hs. Where were all you D40 users!??!?

Well buddy, I got a feeling that D40 users are either complete newbies (who don't care about outings, or just want to use the D40 as an extended point and shoot), or pros (who use it as a backup camera).

I've no idea where I fit in, cause I won't exactly call myself a pro, and D40 is not a backup camera, but my main camera instead of my D2x (the complete opposite of most pros who use D2x/s/h as main and D40 as backup).

And for personal thoughts, I'm not really into paying for outings either. A friendly kopi meet is fine with me, but to pay for such stuff is not in my backyard. (Not condemming those organizers. They have to pay for equipment and time after all, and I guess that is where some newbies start their learning).

When shooting birds, background is very important. Play with the background to isolate the subject.

There were lots of stuff that were taught at the post shooting talk actually.

I have one tip regarding this subject for cheap lens users like me (although I don't shoot birds).

When using a cheap lens with a small aperture, estimate the distance the bird is from you and direction of travel (away or towards you), manual focus into the flight path (pls have a focus scale on your lens!) and wait for the bird to come in.

Erm.. I think snipers will know roughly what I mean. For others, one or two tries later and you should get the hang of it-not as difficult as it sounds.

u guys ready for this thurs showdown?

If you get 2nd hand for D40 make sure the price don't exceed $800, or else you might as well buy a new one. Make sure it comes with a lens as well, and warranty for a few mths left.

Pentax seems worth it, but I am not familiar to that brand so you might want to post a similiar thread in the pentax forum to see their view on it.
