hello everybody here. i have finally bitten the bullet and went ahead and got myself a D300s. have to say, it's really a solid piece of instrument. lovin' it everytime i take it out. hmm.. coupled it with a 18-200vr2 and so far so good. no problems yet. hoping to expand my collection but taking care of the good ol' wallet at the same time.
by the way, i have a question to ask about combining mirror-up and timer together. for example, if i want to take a landscape shot and i have mounted my camera on the tripod and i want to use the mirror-up function. however, the dial on the left indicates that timer and mirror-up is 2 different shooting modes all together. is there anyway i can combine the both of these and take the picture with mirror-up 2 seconds after i press the shutter?
so far the way i'm going around this and just shoot in mirror-up, press the shutter and the mirror goes up. wait for 30 seconds before the shutter makes it's move. 30 seconds seem forever! would appreciate any advice here. thanks!
cheers.!

OK, will try to post some pics this evening at 100% crop for comparison.
Or is it because if you go back to the tech fundamentals... CCD chips are actually more expensive to produce than CMOS ones, and CCDs actually yield less noise compared to CMOS ones..
OK, here's a 100% crop of a shot I took of my daughter.
ISO 400. Is it just me or is it too noisy?
75mm f4.2 60s
in the dim lighted room at 400? hmmmm
It's not really very dim. Normal room lighting lo.
Anyway, result is not quite what I expect from a PRO-sumer camera.. especially after looking at that D3100 noise vs D3 link...

Few things you need to note:
1. D3 is not all that low noise either. Now if you are talking about a D3s, that is a different story.
2. You underexposed your picture, that is why picture looks noisier.
3. D3100 is just released, with a new generation sensor with heavy NR in JPEG.
4 Also, D300s has around the same IQ as the D90 and D5000. But it does slightly less NR than D90 and D5000 because it is a pro level cam. Pros actually prefer slightly more details at the expense of noise. Why? because many pros actually prefer do their own NR in PP. So having more details help.
So in the end, you need to know what you want. Many think that pro level cams will give nicer pictures SOOC with no effort. That is not true. Pro level cameras will give you a lot more features and controls compared to consumer models in the same generation. But you need to know your stuff more to get better pictures. Looking at your expectations and comments. I think what really suits you is a consumer level DSLR like the D3100 or the coming D7000.![]()
Exactly what I feared when I got the D300S especially with the knowledge that D7000 was coming out soon! :bheart:
Hi all D300s users out there,
Just want to ask if any of you coupled your D300s with a 24-70mm F2.8? Better that it is a third party brand tamron/sigma/tokina as my budget does not fit the Nikon 24-70 range.
As i want to get a new lens to replace my current 18-55mm, but I was thinking maybe i could use the lens for FX next time too.
So i just want to hear some of your personal experience..
Thank you
love the nikon 24-70 on my former d300s, coz the range suits me more as i seldom need the wide end so it works for me, its more of ur shooting style, as using the 24-70 u will lose out on the 24 end so does it work for you, others will say pair it up with at dx uwa and u be covered, only u know if it suits u or not...![]()
