d300s or d90 which is worth buying?

Both are worth it. A new starter might not be able to appreciate the D300s
Thanks for viewing my blog. Just thought I would share, give back to the community, just like how I picked up so much from other seniors who helped me along the way.
Compared to a lot of the seniors here, I am still a newbie and my pics are still beginner level.

Hi all, just joined today after looking around here for a while. I'm also considering getting either the D90 or D300s to replace my D80. I'm drawn by the D90's significantly lower cost compared to the D300s but I like the D300s for its faster speed and more AF points. Also the D90 would be more of a replacement rather than an upgrade from my D80. I photograph mainly aircraft so some level of speed would be useful but I do shoot alot of other subjects as well. Any thoughts/recommendations from users of both cameras?

Seriously D80 already quite good. Going from D80 to D90 or D300s is like upgrading from 3room to 4room or 5room HDB. Pump a bit more cash to get D700. It's a whole world of difference. It's like getting a condo with swimming pool. The color redention and speed is fantastic.
Hi there, i was also using D80 and contemplating between the 2 cameras too. in the end i was won over by the AF on the D300s. I haven't really started shooting with the new camera yet but initial impression affirm my decision.

Be sure to try some old Ais lenses, now that you have the D300s. And remember to set your settings banks for fast operation and switching.

According to the Nikon brochures D300s has 7fps while D700 has 5fps so I don't understand your point about the speed. Or am I missing something?
Not to OT from the header. I guess the faster speed that Hotwork is refering to the is higher available ISO capabilities on the D700 which would translate into a faster shutter speed available.

Apologies I didn't make it clearer and thanks Treetrunk. By faster I meant that D700 with a lower pixel density of 12.1M pixels compared with D300s with 12.3M pixels, you can bump up the ISO to ISO6400 for low light photography and the image is still useable. You try that with D300s and noise will serverly degrade the image quality for it to have any meaningful use.
7fps or 5fps have not much use for 80% of the time. I usually go for 1 frame 1 shot. Make every shot count. I don't even try photoshop unless I have to. Even for sports photography which the majority of us are not, taking an action shot depends on your position and the relative speed of your camera. It's funny to be bringing a D3s and spraying the field with the eyes closed and hope one of the frames got a picture you liked.
Sometimes I use a D60 which has a low 3fps to take whitewater rafting shots. Google around and you will find a lesser camera can do many great things. There's a photographer in CS who uses a Pentax KX and he takes better pictures than me.
I meant to say...if you got a D80, it is already a good camera. Spend more money on battery grip and better lens. That's my honest advice.

just a personal preference after using 550D, needed something biggER & weather sealed
But that's a change of brand and thus the entire lens system, assuming you have other lens... Is it worth doing that?

Thanks for all the quick replies. Sorry I'm asking another question: How is the noise handling capability of the D90 and D300s at higher ISO (like 1600 and above). I know this is very relative but my D80 doesn't seem to handle very well above ISO1000 (i.e. looks ok on first glance but quite grainy on closer examination)
If you are talking about hi ISO noise, D90 and D300s handle it very much better than the D80.

Remember to select "All cameras" instead of "Current cameras", so you can select D80.

Perhaps I should make myself more clear...my sister wants to take over my D80, so I'm getting a new cam. My options are either the D90 or D300s. So in a way I gotta buy something, just what to buy is the question.
I'd be spending close to $4000 if I got the D300s plus a lens like the 16-85 or 18-200. For the same amount of money I could get a D90, 16-85 plus the 10.5mm fisheye which I like for the effects. The D300s is very tempting with the 51 AF points, weather sealing, faster fps but is it worth that extra cash or should I just go for D90 and add more lenses with the extra cash?

All boils down to you, u need weather sealing, u need the 51 af points, if yesh than jump for the d300s alternatively u can go for a d300, same spec only no video, single cf slot, diff button layout.
my opinion get the D90, get good glass, like the 17-55, or the 16-85, and the 10.5 fisheye which u like, im sure that are some leftovers for some other items...

Between a D90 or a D300s, go for D300s cos the features are not that different and the price is relatively reasonable. Weather sealing means nothing unless you normally take pictures in the rain. D90 is already a dated model and might be replaced anytime soon. 51AF points?...hmm...very tempting indeed.
I'll say go for D300s...you won't regret it.
