d300s or d90 which is worth buying?

D90 would be more suitable for a start.

The main advantages from D300/s are mainly from
- more controls and speed
- more sturdy body ( and heavier )

:)
- Better AF
- More AF points
- Dual memory card slots
- Better VF
...
Plus a lot more.

What is most suitable to start with is up to each one of us and noone can really tell unless you know the person who is planing to buy a camera.

AI or AIS lenses (manual lenses from the film days), go for D300s

why it was said that using these type of lenses are better with D300s?
I tot PQ are the same while using manual focusing on any camera body ... :dunno:
Sorry ... nob here.
Just need to know alittle bit more on D300s. Tot of buying this camera too ...
currently using my D80 since 2007 ...
thanks to dd123 for tat reviews on D90 or D300s ...

Nobody said Ai Ais lenses are better. Some of us likes it better. The older lenses gives a different feel to the picture IMHO. Not overly sharp, a little film like. Plus, there is no new version of the 50mm F1.2 lens. The fastest is the F1.4 in AFD or AFS.

You should also look at the build of the older lenses. All metal... but a bit heavy. But I like it. Manual focus feel is very very nice.

And only on Dxxx series and above, you can meter with these old lenses. D90 and below metering is not supported.

Here are a couple of pics for you to compare.

85mm/2 Ai
50mm/1.2 Ais
AF-D 50mm/1.4

DANG!! those BOKEH are killing ME ... ... banging my balls against the wall
Rite. D90 and below unable to do metering.
How bout aperture? Can tat be adjusted using my old D80 ...

Aperture is adjusted on the ring of the lens, irregardless of which camera you mount the lenses on. On D80, there is no meter as well, you have to shoot in M mode, and aperture value will not show on the LCD, neither will it be recorded into EXIF.

Thanks for them FRA ( fast respond answers )
BTW ... wot camera used while taking all that photos ?

Not sure how you would handle the camera and conditions, if you are looking for long term, i think D300s magnesium alloy body can bring you to many places.
I'm not saying D90 can't but really need to see the engineering aspect of how the body was made for. You can search this forum, someone brought to winter and survived.

If you really really want a solid camera, get a D3 s/x. Least tested for 300,000 shutter presses and survived, while D300s is half of it.

If you have the budget for D300s, go for it. If not, then stay with D90 choice, makes your life easier. Of course my story was D300s right after 550D. :sweatsm:

pardon me for my ignorant and curiosity. im just curious why 550D was replaced by the d300s? im just curious because im intending to buy a new dslr. contemplating between d90 and 550d. so torn apart. hahaha

just a personal preference after using 550D, needed something biggER & weather sealed ;)

Having said that, it should be mentioned that even without metering, you can still take pictures with old AI and AIS lenses on any Nikon digital SLRs when you are shooting in manual mode.

For example, if you're in a nice, bright room that doesn't have constantly changing light levels, you can determine the exposure settings needed, thereafter you can just snap away without changing anything except for focusing.

So in essence, you still can use AI and AIS lenses on the D90... just that you lack the convenience of in-body metering.

And like daredevil said, the FEELING of a manual focus lens is totally different from manual-focusing an autofocus lens. Try it and you will know. :bsmilie:

so its the feel on your hand and the weather sealing uh? what about the performance in terms of interface, image quality, iso and performance during high iso? noise level?

I would suggest you read THIS post and THIS post

One covers the comparisons between 550D and D90. The other covers the differences between D90 and D300s. Your picture will be complete.

very concise comparison and review :)

D90 is a good start

couldn't agree more.
But for me, I think I'd be getting D300s.
I already hv D80.
D90 and D80 has the same feel and same button location.
Only diffs are its specs.

BTW. On D300s. Has anyone tried using SLOW REAR flashing using external flash?
May I know what's the maximum shutter reading while using this function?
thanks

As in fastest shutter speed, or slowest shutter speed?

minimum slownest and maximum fastest ... :)
and please give me the reading using pop-up flash too.
At times am lazy to bring along my SB ... hehee

slowest seems to be 30s for A and P mode. Fastest is your max sync speed for flash. But it slow rear sync will lose it's purpose at faster shutter speeds.

For S and M you can use rear curtain sync at any shutter speed. Results will vary of course. For M mode, bulb will also work.

Love your landscape pix ... awesome
