D300 or wait for D700

If money is the object, then do rethink it... with a FF cam, you need good lenses else you will have problems with the edges, be it sharpness or vignetting.

Thus, I'd reccomend that you stick to the D300 unless you have a good line of lenses already which can be used on a FF.

Check out lsisaxon's posts...

D3 + 85/1.4 and 24-85/2.8-4 @85mm vs D300 + 17-55/2.8DX @55mm

D3 + 28/1.4 and 24-85/2.8-4 @28mm vs D300 + 17-55/2.8DX @17mm

Here are the differences of a Fx vs a Dx with different lenses. Make sure you have GOOD lenses if you are going to the Fx direction.

hmmm ....what cam are you using? Any reason why you have it or stick to it?
I need more comments since money is the object here ... =)

The point I'm trying to make with those comparisons is that lenses which are considered good in film days are not good enough for FX DSLR. Unless you buy the new lenses designed for digital FX, you won't be getting the full potential of FX. So if you're intending to jump on the FX bandwagon, be prepared to spend money on new lenses if you want to get the most out of the body, otherwise, you're better off sticking with DX.

if all the good ones use FF..why dun u strive to be the minority that makes it big with the DX

think abt it that way...u wun feel so sad liao
hahahha

Would be possible elsewhere but tough in SG, where some clients judge photographers by their gear rather than their skills.

Buy D300 today and use it for 2 years or less, then get D800. By then the price D300+D800 would not be too much more than D700 next month. Spend the same cash and enjoy the best of both worlds.

Then in between save up to buy the better FF lenses so that by the time you get your D800 you're full fledge.

Or buy D700 next month and sweat over good FF lenses tomorrow...

My 2c. And I am putting my money where my mouth is, just got a D300... :bsmilie:

Postscript: Should have said good FX lenses - FF lenses designed for digital. Although I suspect (I wish, I hope, I pray) that older FF film lenses are "good enough" for FX - I got quite a number in my cabinet.

so that means to say that if we dun own any good lens, we are not able to bring out the full performance of the FF ?

I am using a D200 and I get decent results even with mediocre lenses. All because what the sensor sees is a cropped portion of the lens. This will give you more bang out of the buck.

Yes. With FF, you need good lenses. Period.

ALL good photographers uses a full frame.

Then will you get a H3DII if someone said ONLY good photographers use that ;p

or a real damn good photographer will only give away their camera? hahahaha :bsmilie:

Dude, just get what you need lor......

But H3DII is not full frame.. :( Full frame is 60 x 60 and H3D II is only 36 x 48. :(

Let me rephrase that.. With FX, you need good lenses designed for digital. Good lenses originally designed for film may not be good anymore.

Thanks. So can u help us with more tests. ;)

We all must loan our beloved FF film lenses to our friend so he can do the tests.

Actually no need to do comparison test, should be straight shots - evaluate for all the usual criteria and post results. No need to say which is better.

Actually, if you want the D700 FX, you buy the D700 FX. Resistance is futile.

Yah.. just need to find an FX body (D3 at this moment), shoot at a couple of aperture including fully open, then post a resize (for vignetting evaluation), centre crop and corner/side crop (for centre and corner/side sharpness evaluation). In my tests, I used side because of the available features (HDB flats).

Can use my threads as template. ;p

I thought so too.....sigh..:( then you'll have the desire to buy 14-24/2.8, 24-70/2.8, PC-E 24/3.5, PC-E Micro 45/2.8, PC-E Micro 85/2.8, AF-S Micro 60/2.8, AF-S Micro 105/2.8VR.............. it won't end.......

Now I'm trying to see if ZF corner performance is good.. I might consider switching to ZF instead.

Wow ... that's one way to see it. lol =)

Sadly the case, I think so. That's wat most people sees. =(

Ya I actually I am more skewed towards the D300. Do you have any issues like the DBS or any other sinificant or tiny issues you encounter. Hope Nikon got all these nitty gritty stuff sorted out by the time I buy it.

Where's the best place to get the D300 and MB-D10?

ya I want to know too. IS TCW the cheapest? seems like their price goes up and down like stock market ... =(

agreed .... and I need to stop logging to CS forum ... LOL

lsisaxon,
since you have the D3 , could you shade some light on the accuracy of the metering system in D3 and shooting in tricky light situation like e.g concert or clubs and pub. your opinion is highly valued here. =)

then mod the camera in a new shell, with all sorts of cool design elements and claim its a new, state of the art, prototype, top secret, DARPA speced model... :bsmilie:

precisely... :) ... you'll be amazed at how people are impressed at the number of pixels a medium format system can capture (50 and counting for those keeping track)... and then forget about it when actual production begins, when results matter more than numbers...
