Took my D300 to the zoo yesterday. Main objective was to familiarize myself with camera and to test out its key advantages over my previous D200. No surprises, I was most impressed with:
(1) 51 AF points: 51 AF points cover more of the frame than the 11 of the D200. A practical advantage of this was that I no longer had to focus-lock-and-recompose as often as I did with my D200. Coupled with Dynamic AF setting, this allowed me to concentrate more on composition, a big help when a split second can mean missing a keeper with moving and unpredictable animals.
(2) AF speed and sensitivity: For me, it was noticeably faster than the D200. Less hunting of the lens, though the central cross-pattern AF points were noticeably more sensitive than the peripheral non-cross AF points. All 51 points were much more sensitive. I remember a composition where I was on half press, a bird zipped across the frame in a split second, nothing more than silhoutte. Yet the AF actually responded to the movement across the frame tried to focus relock on the silhoutte, before letting go and going back to the original subject in focus. All within split second. If nothing else, this goes to show the sensitivity/IQ of the D300 AF module.
(3) High ISO: Deliberately wanted to test this aspect so kept it on ISO1600 all day, NR normal. Having reviewed the photos on my monitor at home, I can confidently say that performance at that ISO is absolutely superb. I don't know how many stops better/worse than Camera XYZ, but definitely usable straight out of cam. I will be staying at ISO1600, esp for shots in which I need faster shutter speed to freeze movement.
What this all means for me is that I have a lot more keepers. I use a Sigma 50-500 which is 6.3 at the tele end and with the D200 there are some shots I wouldn't even attempt as I knew the ISO and/or AF would not be up to it. I am now getting these shots with the same lens on the D300.
Obviously I have a lot more to learn about getting the most out of the camera but the initial signs are very positive. Can't wait to get hold of the MB-D10 which should improve the handling balance of the body with the above lens considerably. I'm missing the vertical grip quite badly!
Would love to post shots but don't have any host. If anyone knows of any free host that will allow hosting of uncompressed jpegs, I would be happy to post some samples for your own conclusions...
cheers
