I would buy the D2X if it's 6MP. Believe me, I would. Have you even tried the D2X at 12MP?
I'd hazard a guess that most folks on this forum haven't ever used a D2X apart from those who have used one in a shop or at the Nikon launch etc.
Exactly! Batch conversion while great for pre-processing lots of images for a client is not really applicable to getting the most out of the D2X NEF files. As you are only too aware but others aren't processing the D2X raw NEF's one at a time to get the maximum out of the image is time consuming even on a very fast system.espn said:I have a workstation powerful enough to convert 12MP NEF of D2X, but the point is at the end of the day I'm going to use only 6-8MP, so why would I want to waste time re-doing it to 6mp? Sure, I can do batch, but then, what for?
I for one would like to see the D200 come in at around 8-9MP and offering about 80& of the features of the D2x, with similar body ergonomics and colour accuracy mid way between the D100 and D2X. This way costs would be kept reasonable and the performance would be outstanding. I'd say a price of around 2~2.5K USD would be about right for a camera of such specifications as I've outlined.espn said:I never had a need for more then 4mp, I'm lamenting and hoping Nikon can release a 6-8MP D2X version instead. 12MP is nice, the details are SCARY, but also, feedback from 2 users, at 12MP the images are soft, personally I find them ok at Normal sharpness.
I'd agree here, though to be fair it depends on the glass you're using. Certainly at 12MP with top quality Nikkor professional lenses the D2X images resolve more than I can get with 6x6 chromes using either Zeiss or Schneider lenses. I suspect that it will give 6x9 chromes a real run for it's money. As for soft, NEF's are a tad soft to start with but still resolve better than just about any other DSLR on the market., JPEG fine with sharpening are awsome for low end jobs.

I'd actually say 12MP is overkill for 99.9% of the amateur world as 6MP gives excellent results for up to 20x30" prints using a Lambda or similar printer when coupled with a good post shooting workflow.
The more I use the D2X the more I'm convinced that this is really not a good choice of camera for those who won't be using it to it's full potential, it's images are awsome to be sure, but it really isn't a camera for the masses as it will cane you big time if you don't have the prerequisite skills, lenses and knowledge that such a camera demands.
