sorry, i'm not sure about your settings, so i'm going to ask a few questions:

more info

- did you use a tripod? yes with tripod --- sunny day
- did you use AF or MF? AF
- is it possible the first 2 are just slightly unfocused? taken a series of photo, it is the sharpest one

looks like the 85mm could be the sharpest then! that shot has the slowest shutter speed even, of the three.

but i also noticed the sharpening is Auto for all 3. wonder if that affects anything... but still, it seems the 85mm is sharpest.

i would still prefer to have a tripod-mounted comparison of a static subject like a shoe, stuffed toy, etc. and with sharpening set to a fixed amount, before i'd draw firmer conclusions. but you may arrive at the same conclusions in the end...

My speculation is the following:
i) You shot the picture at 50mm on a 50mm lens
ii) on the 28-70 you shot the picture at 28mm
iii) on the 85mm lens you shot it at 85mm.
If we work on the assumption that you subject did not move and you place your camera on a tripot, this means that your 85mm should be the sharpest because you zoomed in more. Try a 70-200 and shoot at 100mm on the same camera to subject distance, your 70-200 should appear sharper.
