Cost of the thing is already S$3,550 to the dealers. If some shop is selling S$3,400 - go grab it!

Mauler, may I ask, if the dealer cost is S$3,550 how much did you pay for it

Maybe the S$3400 price that I heard is not "now = everybody fighting to grab one" price.

Which shop did you get it from?

Well... I am home.. And no I do not have a D100 with me. I only went to John 3:16... He had one left in stock that I was allowd to try out. It was reserved for another customer though.

Snapped a few pics. It felt ammazing in the hand. I was very surprised at how solid it feels. Great build quality. Tried it out with the 24-85 AFS G lens. Was very happy with the speed and performance. I found the controls a little uncomfortable with multiple dials and control knobs.

Keep in mind this is from a Nikon 950 user... I have done some SLR photography but this is with some older Pentax and Konica fully manual...

I have a lot of learning to do.. but as suggested I am waiting for the S2 before any decisions are made. Well that and waiting for stock of what ever brand it is I choose :-)

Cheers!

Mike

I paid a little more (relative to the price) than the dealer's cost. I won't specify the amount though, given the hot interest now. Suffice it to say that it's not that much from the cost.

Cheers!

When the camera was officially launched a few weeks back, I was told the price will be around S$3,300~S$3,400. Closer to the actual release, I was told the price will be around S$3,600~S$3,700.

I got the camera from a friendly local shop. Again, given the hot interest, I will prefer to keep the location quiet. I am sure you understand.

Cheers!

Just thought I would pass on word...

Was just walking around Lucky Plaza (I think thats the right name) and visited a few of the shops.. Many seemed to have stock on the D100. I did not see any S2's on the shelves, but if I was willing to pay they where willing to bring one in for me.

Its to bad most of these shops are run by crooks. I did not note the names of the shops, but the attitude seems to be the same at all of them. Intial price is marked up about 50%. Once you express some knowledge or turn to walk out the price drops close to where it should be. Ask to see it and its got to be brought in from another store. No touching the product or trying it; Not a nice experience. I know as locals most people here would be familiar with these tactics played by these shops. Being from Canada (although staying here long term) it really bothers me to see these shops ripping people off. Is this acceptable or do you feel the same way?

Anyways... Back to the point.. If you are looking for a D100 there around and available!!

I really feel sorry for your unpleasant encounter with the shops that employ such tactics. Looks like we still have a long way to go. :(

I believe most of the shops there work in a team. And they share the stocks. That means none of them have a "real" camera in their own shop, but when they find a customer, they would call up the central stock room, and you have to wait for a few minutes, then someone will deliver the goods to that particular shop. So in conclusion, it does not matter which shop you walk in, they will have the same quoted price/ same tactics. But be careful about the salesman, some of them will get violent, there were cases that the shop salesman beat up the customers badly.

This is EXACTLY why you never hear of any ClubSNAPper recommending shops in Lucky Plaza & Far East Plaza - I wouldn't go so far as to brand them as crooks, and to be fair to the shops, they are also out to do business, albeit their targets are those naive tourist-type spur-of-the-moment shoppers from overseas that get caught up in the "Wow Singapore is so cheap" syndrome.

Any camera enthusiast walking into those kinds of shops probably will not be "conned" into paying those kinds of prices (i say probably, because there are also naive camera enthusiasts).

I would also go further to say that these kinds of shops exists in ALL tourist areas around the world, so its not unique to Singapore.

I was quite mad at the one shop keeper. Kept me waiting for about 15 minutes well he went to get the S2. Came back and wanted the money before I could see it.

Fortunate for me I guess.. I am about 6' tall and 300lbs. I don't think many of the shop keepers would bother me to much.

Personally I doubt I will ever go back to these shops. Not with the type of service, and borderline illegal activities. There are enough other friendly shops about that deserve my money. Now I only wish I could warn all the tourists!

I cannot speak highly enough about the service I have gotten at John 3:16. Prices seem good and the service is GREAT!

I think crook is a good word..

I don't have a problem with making money. Stores are in business to turn a profit. 5% markup, 10% markup.. That is fair, trying to make 50% or more at the cost of one individual is not. On top of the other methods.. Bait and Switch etc.. I feel they are crooks. I am sure (I hope anyways) this is not the case with all of them!

I guess you point is true about most tourist area's being the same is true however, I think the problem seems to be worse in most of the asian countries I have been to. At first I was going to say I have not seen this problem in Canada (Toronto)... But I think that is because I don't visit these type of shops at home.

I guess the same should go here though. Just don't visit them.

Unless you want your D100 and your in a hurry ;-)

And unfortunately, at this early stage, there will be people desperate enough to want to pay slightly above the going rate to get their hands on the brand, spanking new D100.

A quick survey of the normal retailers we ClubSNAPpers frequent indicates that the initial shipment of D100s allocated to these shops are ALL GONE! Within a day!! I didn't even get a chance to check one out

Also, at least you have found a place where you are comfortable with. :)

I posted most of this message in CK's S2 thread.. But thought I should post here as well.....

I tried out the D100 on Tuesday and the S2 on Wednesday. No side by side comparison, but first thoughts would be something like this..

Build Quality: D100 feels more solid. Has a very tight body and in general seems to be a better build. The S2 USB/power cover is a very cheap plastic that I am confident would break off very quickly. The firewire port has a nice rubber cover.

Ergonomics: The S2 feels better in the hand. They have molded in a thumb grip on the back of the camera that helps the camera sit
quite nice in the hand

Easy of Use: I found the S2 a lot easier to adjust and work with. Out of the box a couple button presses and it is ready to shoot. The D100 I had to fiddle with for sometime to figure out how shoot/adjust in manual or Shutter/Apprature priority. This maybe slightly bias in that I used the D100 first, and I am sure some of the learning I did on the D100 made the S2 easier

Picture Quality: Unfortunatly I cannot put a clear answer here. Somone used the S2 before me and changed some of the settings. A custom white balance was selected which has thrown off a lot of the pics colours. I did not notice until I got home. The D100 shots appeared a bit sharper to my eye. The S2 was set to Std sharpening I believe, not sure about the D100.

AF: Both seemed very quick to me. Tested D100 only with the Nikkor AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5D ED G, and the S2 with the Nikkor AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5D ED G and the Sigma 15-30. The S2 seemed to hunt a little bit more in that it would extend all the way to infinity and then come back and lock. It did not do this all the time but enough that I noticed. The D100 did not seem to hunt at all. Lock on fast...

Not sure what else to add. I was VERY close to purchasing the S2 last night. I am still second guessing myself and have not come to a decision yet. I think have the optional battery/vertical grip and firewire is something I would miss if I went with the D100. Tought choice!

Sorry for any typo's... No time to edit right now ;-)

Mike!

Bedpan,
What's the price of the S2Pro that you "almost" bought?
