{CS "critics" suck?}
Yup, couldn't agreed more. Especially those who wrote threads that went "good lah, impressive lah, very beautify lah".. totally no substanes, just wanna stroke the thread-starter's ego, and silly thread-starter would go "thank you here, thank you there" routine. Wat lau, taboleh tahan these craps!~

I go for the interview first then try liao let you know..:bsmilie:

Maybe you want to practise with a milk bottle before going for the interview first? :)

you forgot the 'nose bleed' and the 'pro pro' ... 偽善だ ...

Regarding all the nose breed, nice, pro, sharp, good, more comments....

Sometime when I see some photos posted, when I think it's nice, then I may comment some nice wording to encourage the TS on his work, and hope he can do better.

Though in some others eye, there may be plenty of faults in the same photos and deem to be a lousy photo. But that shoudn't stop me from praising the TS's work, as in my amateur eye, it's still nice piece of work. Since different people looks at things differently.

Though indeed sometime I am lazy in describing why I feel the photo is nice to me.

Suckin' suckin' suck-suck
sucky-sucky-suck...

Am I going to get murdered by the moral police? :embrass:

The moral police will leave you alone, but the censor mafia will be visiting you.

I didnt read through the whole 10pages posts, just replying to the thread title.
Theres something I just simply find it "funny".

CS A gets upset and starts whining around when CS B says his photos sucks with valid reasons.
If you can't accept critics, why bother to post them up in the first place?

CS A is very happy when CS B says his photos are outstanding without valid reasons.
Again, is that the way CS A is hoping for? If yes, CS A photos dont suck, his/her photo belongs to the drainage area.

Come mon, get a life.
If you think CS critics suck, I can't agree or disagree on that. But a number of photographers, be it a profession or hobbies, went off to private forum where critiques are real and from there, they'll learn, improve and move on.

1. RIGHT OF SPEECH

a. I find it challenging to reconcile person's right to freedom of speech
and the fact that the language is offensive to some other people.

b. Due to different upbringing and the inherent subjectivity of language, it is inevitable
that some folks deem words like "suck / trash / nosebleed" as offensive while others deem
them as perfectly OK.

c. I would suggest avoid participating on the forum if one is unable to
handle people using such language to describe you or your precious pictures.

2. CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM

I believe its useful to follow some guidelines on giving constructive criticism, e.g.:-

a. State What you like about the picture? And why?
b. What do you dislike about the picture? And why?
c. What can be improved and how? If possible, elaborate & give examples.
d. Etc.

If someone say the pic sux and never explain why, then that person really SUX. SUX to the core and I cannot only use the words "ARROGANT" or "SIAO". However, if the above guidelines are adhered to, then I dun see the reason why the comments cannot be sux or down to the trash can. But pls dun use the words, "Piss at your face" :D

aiyoh, so difficult to understand meh?Ask around who is the judges who go around condemning people's work. Who said they should be trashed. And who said "it sucks"
Like that still cannot see who acted like an authority???????????????? Like that still cannot tell who wanted to act as a critique???????????

Like that still cannot understand????????

There is no "critic" title in CS. So who are you referring to when you say "critics"?

So student and DP have to be treated as critics and you can be treated as a commenter only? If you give a one liner you can get away by calling it a just a comment, and then when someone else says "bad exposure" or "bad composition" they are labelled as "critics" that "suck"?

If by your definition "a critique is a "detailed review" made with serious examinations and with authority" then when DP says the pictures "suck" then he is only making a comment right?

Please tell me how to differentiate between a "critic" and a "commenter" from your perspective, because from my perspective your logic is indeed twisted.

I guess you are somehow right in some ways about this on maturity.

Look at all last recent posts making fun of the word "suck, sucky, sucking....milk bottle etc ????" out of context and you can well see the kind of characters we have.

Quite amusing for sure. Provides some humour to the thread, though the taunts are anything but intelligent. Maybe I should join in too .......:-

Hey your sucking lame sucky jokes suck! ;p :bsmilie: (opps.. i think the MODs supposed to discourage these taunts as per Terms of Use)

Just a thought ... the photography's critics was judged by the critics' critics this time round. Apparently the photography critics did not appear to be taking the critiques very well themselves and resorted to taunts. Does that mean one is forbidden to critique the critics in this forum?

......... Personally, I feel that the level of maturity in local forums like CS, is still not there yet........... People are still adopting the "either u r with us or against us" mentality, and even myself, am sometimes guilty of that. However, that should not deter ourselves from trying to bring discussions to a higher level. We need to constantly remind ourselves about this kind of mental pitfalls, as we are not perfect.

That's all I have to say.

Cheers,

Kenny

well.. i would like to share with fellow csers about one experience i had. i know my comments in the critic's corner is not very sharp-tongue.

but i shared with these csers on some experiences i had with other professionals and lecturers alike.

this is how one of the conversation tht was happening..

I was walking along jurong point when i suddenly saw my old schoolmate, and we waved at each other and said hi.

I didnt know he frequent CS, but i know he is not really interested in photography so i also don't know what he is doing there.

But he said this (he was sharing his conversation with his friend from his school who is a fellow cser)

CSerA: Eh, my classmate from Ngee Ann Poly ah ask me to see his pictures leh, then ah..i see liao.. i keep quiet. But he is very good. I think.

CSerA: Then he keep asking me to give comments, i said i don't know, maybe i refer you to my friend who is shooting weddings ?

CSerB: Is it from ClubSNAP ?

CSerA: Yah.. he is from ClubSNAP.

CSerB: oh.. what is his nick ?

CSerA: glennyong lor.

CSerB: huh ? you know him ah ? that F!%$er ! what he know. he know nuts. only know how to give useless comments. he is nothing to me lah. i think i know more than him lor. He think he very big. you go tell him, read the dictionary and check what is the word constructive and the word comment.

CSerA: huh ? really meh ? i don't think he very active now what.

CSerA: *walks away..*

i am rather upset and dissapointed to see that students nowadays is so proud of themselves, and when i backtracked, those few whom i've given comments to in the critic's corner, these are pictures which lacked certain basic techniques or even qualities that makes a picture or snapshot called Photograph.

anyway. i am interested to see who is this student.

to me.... i wouldnt even use words like "Suck" "****" "trash" "rubbish" on photographs... the worst sentence i've ever said to my assistant / trainee is "erm.. this one ah.. cannot. but still can improve. good effort, keep it up.."

well. i think if someone even borders to even give comments is good already. One should be appreciative that someone takes the time to even look at your photograph and give comments.

My time. my laoshi. look one time, throw the negatives one side and say "Nah !! take back. all cannot use. You don't take back i throw away i tell you. " (now he is not around anymore. i want to learn more from him also cannot already... )

My views

Critiques and critics.... Had been brought into many a photography conversation of mine.

First the poster. If he can't accept critiques, he shouldn't post at all.

Next the critic. He should give at least constructive comments. Say you don't like it, say it's bad yes but how can it be improved. Do not use words like "suck" and never assume an 'angry' tone. This will demoralise the poster.

Glenn, sorry to hear about your teacher.
